ds has wierd toenails - bit worried

One one foot, his toe nails are growing extra long and curving over the top of his toe IYSWIM. It doesn't sound/look like ingrowing toenail but I am worried it is going to damamge his feet. Anyone had anything similar? I don't like to bother gp for something so trivial-sounding but...

Cut them straight across rather than rounding them off as this can cause ingrowing toenails.

HAve you cut his nails?

trim them with nail scissors, my sons do that too

well, yes, of course I've cut his nails, but it's almost like his nailbed is extended too, so I can't cut them at the 'normal' position for a toenail.
Agh, I should try and take a picture...
