Swapping a mirena for a copper coil

I love the convience of not having period and not worrying about contraception, but I'm getting side effects with my mirena. Crippling PMS, weight gain and my face it getting hairy! I'm thinking that the hormones don't agree with me.

I'd like to swap it for another coil as I haven't got on very well with other types of contraception in the past

Could someone tell me what to expect?

I have a copper coil and it's fine.
Periods heavier and a little bit crampy. They also drag on a bit - mine have gone from 4 days to 7-8.

I also have the copper. Been almost a year now and my periods have started to settle into a pattern at last. 5-7 days, slightly heavier than I was used to and a few cramps but nothing a sit down with a cuppa, choc and MN can't cure!!
Best thing I ever did. Me and my GP decided against the Mirena because of my history of Depression and migraines.

Same here. Have awful pmt and reacted badly to progesterone only pill. Can't go on combined pill because of migraines. Copper coil was best solution.

Thanks! I think I should stay away from hormones. Dp says my pmt has always been a problem (yes I thanked him for that) but it feels worse than ever at the moment.

It's the thought of going back to full periods, yuck, I haven't had one for over 3 years. I'll make an appointment with the doc this week to talk to her about it.

My sister had the copper coil years ago, had really bad PMT and incredibly heavy periods. She literally had to take to her bed like a Victorian lady. I'm afraid it put me off and I have the Mirena, luckily with no probs.

woodenchair · 29/06/2008 20:42

That sounds horrible Rach, I really don't want periods back

you do get heavier periods but i really get on with the coil, had it about 4 years now

detoxdiva · 29/06/2008 20:49

Have had the copper coil fo 2 years and have experienced no side effects - the best contraceptive I've had - good luck

Olihan · 29/06/2008 20:51

I really like my copper coil. The first day of each period tends to be very heavy, especially over the first night but they're still only 5 days long.

I opted not to have the Mirena for similar reasons to most people on here. My hormones are quite screwy enough, without adding fake ones to the mix .

Didn't want to scare you off, just something to consider. We are all different and our bodies react in different ways. If it doesn't suit you after a few months you can always change to something else.

I finally had my mirena removed at the end of last year and I feel sooo much better. PMS has gone from 3 weeks to 3-4 days much to everyone's (especially dp) relief.

I had a copper coil fitted 2 weeks ago, but I'm still bleeding, is this normal? I'm not due for another week.

Anyone?

Sorry woodenchair can't help you but i do remember bleeding for a while after i had mine fitted.
I had a mirena for about 18 months and had it taken out cos i was feeling awful, pmt ALL the time and headaches. Got copper coil now and yes periods are heavier - i am usually on for about 7-9 days and 3 days are very heavy but i am much happier about it.

woodenchair · 27/02/2009 08:22

Thanks for the reply, just needed some reassurance. The bleeding isn't heavy, just needed to know if it was normal. I'm due to go in for a check up after my next cycle, I'll ask about it then.
Glad you feel better now the mirena is out
