Hard area below right rib

Hi all

I have a hard area below my right rib, first noticed it in Jan 2025. It’s fairly large, when laying down it’s most prominent. When I tense muscles it goes quite flat but still hard. I can’t feel it too much when standing, only went raising arm I can feel it slightly. It can feel uncomfortable to lay on this side.

I’ve been the gp twice (2 different gps), first time they said muscle and second time they said it’s tissue. On the second time I had pain higher up so they they gave me an ultrasound mainly to check gallbladder but it did check other organs too - the ultrasound was normal.

im just wondering if anyone else has had this & what it was? I can’t stop worrying about what it is.

Has endometriosis been ruled out? That can extend as far as the upper abdomen.

@Coinkidinki no hadn’t considered this. Would I be able to feel that from the outside though?

Potentially - it's worth checking if you have any other symptoms and ruling out. Mine affected my lung capacity because it was putting pressure on my lungs.

You can get a hard palpable edge to your liver with hepatitis or cirrhotic changes. But you’d probably already be getting pain (in your back) or other symptoms so probably not that.

@gettingolderbutcooler thanks. When I first noticed this I had an abdominal scan which looked at the liver and it was normal so assume it’s not that.

My husband has a damaged liver and it's evident on blood tests, so if your bloods are normal and you've also had a normal scan, it's probably not your liver, which is good news.
