Can hospital doctors see results of blood tests requested by GPs?

In my area, the hospital uses MyChart, and all your hospital appointments, waiting list info, test and scan results, etc, are available there, and you can log on and see them. GPs can't see any of those results.

When GPs request blood tests, the results also come on MyChart because they are processed at the hospital, and then they are sent separately to the GP, who looks at them and enters them in my GP record. The hospital doctors can't normally see the GP record, but can they see the results of the blood tests specifically, given that they're on MyChart and were processed at the hospital?

It would be helpful if they could, as then they could see the pattern over time, given that sometimes the same blood test has been requested by various different people. I suspect they probably can't see them, as I know when the GP does a referral, they have to include the results of various tests from the past year, and it seems like it would be much easier if the hospital doctors just looked at the results themselves.

Depends which hospital lab the GP sent the bloods to. My heart always sink when one of the practices on the edge of our area refers a patient in, because they always send bloods to the lab at the next hospital, and we can’t see them. Though our most common tertiary centre and our hospital can see each other’s results as lots of money went into making it possible.

Hospitals and GPs in different areas all use different systems that are poorly connected, if at all. It's partly because the NHS isn't run as one big company and partly because they were early adopters of technology and run outdated unconnected systems.

It's definitely the same hospital, just one main hospital here that all the GPs use for referrals and that does the blood tests, big university hospital that uses MyChart. The GPs don't see the hospital results, but I don't know about the other way around. I guess there might not be any way to tell if they're all so different.

Here we can see all bloods in the county on our hospital system. GPs in the county can see their own bloods on their system, and have remote access to our hospital system to see hospital bloods if they want to.

In my area all blood results go onto a clinical portal which can be accessed by any clinician in the area who is involved with the patient's care. GPs can see hospital results and vice versa.

My local hospital, which is a big university one, uses MyChart (it might have been the first one to use it) and my GP can see the results, blood tests, MRIs and so on, wherever taken within the system.

I think it’s wonderful. I can have blood taken at my GP in the afternoon and most of the results will be on MyChart for me to view before I go to bed. I think the last collection from the surgery is 4:30pm.

I assume the hospital doctors can also see the same results, as my (paid by the NHS) physio can.

We might be talking about the same hospital...

But my GP can't see things ordered by the hospital doctors, only the bloods/scans/tests ordered by the surgery, so maybe it even varies between practices.

It is handy for my that I can see the MyChart blood results that evening, even when the surgery doesn't have them recorded on my GP notes until a few days later when they've been checked by the GP. (I know there are good reasons for that, and possible problems with me seeing them on MyChart first, but I personally like it).

I've ended up having repeat blood tests when different teams don't know I've already had them, but that could also be because they haven't actually checked!
