Constipation, in pain

flightless55 · 15/08/2026 20:22

Guess I just wanted some company

I have been suffering with episodes of diarrhoea for few months now - last one 1st August

ive had two tiny tiny bowel movements since

its been 15 days and I am in so much pain in stomach and back

tried suppositories past two days - no luck

called 111 - he wasn’t the best and said it couldn’t be “extreme pain” because I was able to call and think / talk

but I am waiting on call back - not sure what else could be done to be fair don’t know why I called :(

I feel so alone

Can you get some dulcolax?

somanychristmaslights · 15/08/2026 20:38

Have you been to the doctors? That’s not normal bowel behaviour.

have you tried eating kiwi? They’re meant to be very good.

GreenFootstool · 15/08/2026 20:41

Well, what have you tried? Seen a pharmacist? What have you taken? How's your diet?

DoAWheelie · 15/08/2026 20:41

Movicol is your friend here. You can get a box at the pharmacy, it has instructions for use on the back. Keep using it for a bit once the blockage is clear to give your body time to return to normal otherwise it's common for it to happen again soon after.

I have suffeeed with chronic constipation for years. No conclusive diagnosis from doctors/ gastroenterologists. I understand the pain. I have found taking chia seeds with milk and weetabix has helped. Flaxseed too has helped me. Soak the chia seeds for at least 10/15 minutes (though longer is helpful- even overnight) and add the flaxseed as you're about to eat. I find that most laxatives don't work at all on me. One that does work is a prescription of Bisacodyl 5mg.

flightless55 · 15/08/2026 20:45

I’ve been trying suppositories as mentioned

I didn’t realise it’d been that long

i get it I’ve messed up but I feel bad enough

I’ve taken laxido but obviously that’s going to take a few days to kick in

Has this been investigated? This isn't normal at all! Do you have a bowel condition? Have you started new medications or anything else changed to cause the change in bowel habit?

-movicol/laxido sachets add water to the bowel and aren't addictive to the bowel like senna and other stimulating laxatives are
-Water, movement and fruit such as kiwi can help
-The way you sit on the loo has a massive effect on being able to open your bowels. Raise your feet with bricks, large tins or a squatty potty
-Please see your GP if this is a change in bowel habit though!

Thanks
ive tried 2 10mg ones with no luck apart from mucus

I know the doctor won’t be impressed as I’ve IBS so should have been paying attention more to not get to this point - just been super busy in school holidays etc

I love kiwis and chia seed breakfasts thankfully :)

I would recommend a couple of teaspoons of magnesium sulphate (Epsom salts) in half a glass of warm water. It clears everything within a couple of hours. Tastes horrible but just down it quickly.

Edited

That stuff has a evil 😂

Victorius19 · 15/08/2026 20:52

The danger with any kind of laxative is that it won't help if you've got an impaction. So please don't try anything unless suggested by a medical professional here.

I use epsom salts if I haven't been for a few days and it really does work. But I wouldn't risk it if I hadn't been for 15 days....

ElliePhant28 · 15/08/2026 20:52

Sorry it’s 4 teaspoons, works very quickly. I’ve had chronic constipation and didn’t know about this trick.

Chia seeds 2 heaped tablespoons in water or yogurt .

RedFatball · 15/08/2026 21:16

Microlax enema, you can get them on Amazon. Please please believe what it says and DO NOT go far from the bathroom for a couple of hours after using.

7238SM · 15/08/2026 21:21

I've never considered getting laxatives on a script before! You can buy laxido/movicol from pharmacies and larger supermarkets if still waiting.

Sorry you’re right but it was such an embarrassing appointment and I was frazzled and in pain didn’t think to say it’d be cheaper for NHS to get my own

I’m on holiday now
so I’ll google if there’s anywhere local open tomorrow

Hi OP

I would encourage you to hold off on suggestions until you've had that clinician call back.

Are you passing wind?

Badvocthebad · 15/08/2026 21:36

Lizzy7596 · 15/08/2026 20:52

That stuff has a evil 😂

It is! <works though>
As per pp..are you passing wind? Are there tummy rumbles you can hear?
You can but laxudo otc but it does take time if you follow the disimpacton protocol

flightless55 · 15/08/2026 21:57

Thanks all
ill just leave it for now - I’m scared I’ll get told I’ve done something wrong

see if 111 call back in the night

Not sure how your on holiday if your in so much pain? I didn't pass a stool for nearly 4 weeks and ended up in hospital. Do take this seriously as you can start vomiting faeces which can become life threatening, I had large amounts of liquid enemas which luckily worked, still no diagnosis 20 yrs on. You can take loads of the movicol or Laxido I was on 8 sachets a day, thankfully only need 3 now. Please don't leave this, I wd b getting home an straight to gp/ a an e especially if your in so much pain as may b more than just constipation.
