GP suspects appendicitis and offered hospital or pain relief only - WWYD?

I’ve just been to the GP re pain I’ve had.
started yesterday in lower left quadrant - I assumed was ovary linked as I often get ovulation pain. I’d say that pain was around a 6. I took painkillers and was fine.

Today pain is between a 5 (at good points) and 9. Went to doc’s - pain in now lower right quadrant. When it’s around 8-9 I have to walk slowly, all hunched over, but it does come and go in terms of intensity. The doctor felt around and thinks it’s my appendix. I’ve got a pretty high pain threshold but today has challenged me - a lot!

He's given me the choice of stronger painkiller and see how to goes; or go to hospital.

I know that you’re not doctors but what would you do? Because I don’t want to feel like I’m wasting anyone’s time and I also hate hospitals.

I would go to hospital. I’m a paramedic.

Personally, I’d go to hospital, just to get it checked out and other things ruled out.

Hospital, where they will check it out and either deal with it, if necessary, or send you home with pain relief.

I’d go to the hospital. They can do blood tests to look for infection markers and scans to look at the appendix.

The last thing you want is a burst appendix. Peritonitis isn't pleasant, I ended up on life support in ICU with it. Go to hospital.

Thank you all - in a world where medical services are overused and abused, I really wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing. Interestingly, my pain is currently quite low (around a 4) which definitely lures me
knto a false sense of security! X

Last patient I saw was delayed diagnosis of appendicitis
appendix ruptured and she ended up with two drains and was very very poorly for several weeks
therefore straight to hospital

I had appendicitis years ago, the pain actually lessened the longer it went on (over 24 hours) but it was still appendicitis. Go to hospital.

Does it hurt more when you press on your belly at the site, or when you release your hand from pressing? Can you jump up and down? I’ve had mine out and well remember walking around hunched over in pain before. My white blood cell count was through the roof too. I also have a family member who had it burst- much more complicated to deal with once it bursts, and potentially fatal. Go to hospital and get it ruled out.

Hospital, if its query appendicitis the last thing you want to be doing is sitting at home masking it with painkillers. Hope you feel better soon

Yes, I’d agree- hospital. Have you taken the strong pain relief? Might be masking the symptoms.

I’d go to hospital and I’m really not a fan of medical environments at all. I used to work with a lady who put off going to A&E with similar pain to yours. Her appendix burst and she was very ill and off work for a long time.

Given that the GP has already said that it might be appendicitis, and has already mooted hospital, I'd say that a worsening of pain means that it is really sensible and appropriate to go to hospital. (Better today than tomorrow, since I imagine Fridays start to get quite busy later in the day.)

I had suspected appendicitis (decades ago), and it turned out to be an ovarian cyst that needed emergency surgery. Both conditions are MUCH better to treat early rather than too late!!

Word of warning on that press test: with me they ruled out appendicitis because I didn’t react however they expected me to, but it turned out it had already burst so that must have been why. I didn’t feel that much pain either but was very hunched over. My recovery took months. I would go straight to hospital.

Didn't he at least check your bloods see if crp and wcc are up?

Years ago my daughter had suspected appendicitis and we were advised hospital. After a night in it turned out not to be that never really got to the bottom of it never happened again, but I do think that I would be cautious and go to hospital. Better sorted than coping with a burst one

No he didn’t. He asked about symptoms. Temp, feeling sick and pain. He then pressed down and I actually teared up both times he pressed down on the area.

Edited to say he said the hospital would have to do bloods x
