I will start with saying I have severe heath anxiety right now so I’m constantly scanning for danger. My dd is 16 and I have had all sorts of anxiety that I have tried to hide about her health of recent months. At the weekend I thought her one eyes looked a little different to other but she is wearying false eyelashes so I asked her to at me in the pretext of looking at her eyelashes. I looked into her eyes and her eyeballs seemed to move rhythmically for a few seconds. I thought she was doing it to be silly . When I asked she didn’t seem to know what I was taking about and in now realise that it’s not something you can do to order. I keep going over what I saw. I’m now panicking that it’s something needs investigating. She has no symptoms. It was late at night and she was super tired to put it into context. I’ve looked back at old photos and her eyes have always been a bit mismatched as in one looks a little less open than the other. But when she was little they she said she had a pseudo squint no misalignment . Her eyes are still very wide apart. I’ve not seen another episode since.

If you really do think there's a problem and that it's not just your own health anxiety you could suggest she gets a check up at the opticians before going back to school/college for the new term. No need to mention your concerns to her it would just be just a routine check up that everyone should have anyway

temperedolive · 30/07/2026 09:47

Tell her what you think you saw and ask her if she wants to talk to her GP about it? Woth no other symptoms it's probably yoir imagination, but she's old enough to decide for herself if she wants to follow it up.

Were they wiggling side to side? Sounds like she’s been taking MDMA!

Fearandanxiety · 30/07/2026 09:48

Yes wiggling side to side … I was her all day so no drugs

I think you should visit the GP to get help for your mental health problem. I'd never heard of nystagmus and had to Google it. Your poor daughter. Has she had 16 years of this?

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 30/07/2026 09:52

If in England, and in education if should be free as she is between 16-18.

Yes I’m aware that I have been pretty terrible parent with my mental health. I go for long periods of time when I’m better but I’ve got alot of added anxiety with a husband going through cancer treatment so I’m in a really bad place mentally right now.

I have oscillating eyes they do move from side to side but my brain has apparently learned to settle them unless im tired then they move, i suggest you just say to her and get her an opticians appointment, you have built this up and now spiraling, deep breath and get her eyes checked go with her and just tell them.

Thanks for your reply.. can I ask if this something you were born with or is it acquired? I don’t think this age has had before which makes me more anxious

Well an optician noticed in my 20s they did a scan it was fine, I attended the eye clinic as a child for a squint and they either didn't notice or I acquired it later on, mine flicker. Just get her an appointment if your mental health is poor is there anyone else that can go with her/you

Lomonald · 30/07/2026 10:20

It was just a scan in the opticians I didn't have to go to the hospital or anything

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 30/07/2026 10:51

No, you need to stop now - you have asked a question and the advice / reply is go to optician.
Asking other people their eye health history is not helping you.

You agree you have severe health anxiety, go back to your GP for yourself.

Have you booked an optician ?
