Amitriptyline for combined issues …

Just looking for reassurance i guess.

I’m almost certainly peri, but also seeing the doctor for other things, my IBS is worse than ever, (IBS-D) I have fibro which seems to be getting worse and now I’m suffering with pain In my leg which doc suspects is related to my sciatic nerve. On top of this I’m totally unable to switch off, everything stresses me out, thinking worse case scenario. My doctor is brilliant and doing hormone tests over a period of months, referred me for a scan and physio. Now I don’t take any meds bar ones for BP and loperimide but she’s given me a script for amitriptyline, I don’t even like taking paracetamol as they make me feel a bit dozy, but something needs to give as I’m unable to drive due to the pain in my leg, however I took amitriptyline years ago and gave up after 2 doses as it wiped me.
its a 10mg dose, which is really low right? Does the drowsiness subside? My dr pointed out it’s likely to not only help the leg but IBS too and potentially my mood. Does anyone have positive stories to give me the push to start taking it? (I promise I’m not usually this needy)

I take 10mg every night for nerve pain, I never had any drowsiness at all. Been taking it for two years and zero side effects!

I’ve taken 10mg at night for a few years due to nerve pain / sciatica.
It does help me sleep and doesn’t make me groggy in the mornings.
I was initially started on 25mg and that wiped me out! I struggled to get up for the school run. But 10mg doesn’t seem to have that drowsiness effect on me and has helped my pain and anxiety.
All the best.

I take amitriptyline, initially for some nerve pain but more recently to help me sleep due to peri-related joint pain.
I found it made me really groggy the next day initially but I adjusted the time I took it to earlier in the evening and after the first few days the grogginess subsided.
Initially I was on 10mg then that increased to 20mg after a few weeks.

I’ve recently increased to 20mg for fibromyalgia pain in the night and it helps me get back to sleep when I wake in the early hours as I’m still drowsy then. I never feel drowsy after getting up though

Thank you all this is what I needed to hear! I just need to bite the bullet I think! This is so helpful.

I couldn’t cope with amitriptyline at all. The grogginess never went away. I asked the GP to try nortriptyline instead, following a suggestion from my rheumatologist, which is far better. I tend to only take it every other night though during bad flare-ups to help me sleep.

Anyway it’s potentially another option if the amitriptyline isn’t for you. Best of luck Flowers

See my sleep is all over too, it feels like if I give it a go it could be potentially a silver bullet to sort a lot out
glad it’s working for you, could I ask what time you take it?

Helped me sleep initially but that eased off to the point have been able to take it occasionally in the morning and go to work with no obvious difference. But everyone is different

NewDogOwner · 30/07/2026 10:14

Husband takes it at night to help with the pain AND to help ease into sleep.
