Excessive sweating from scalp and face, any tips before seeing GP?

I sweat so much from my hairline and behind my ears as well as the back of my head - I have short hair and when I sweat my hand comes back wet. Not a lot needed to trigger it either.

I do sweat from the usual places but feel that’s manageable with the right antiperspirant and I shower regularly. It’s just incredibly embarrassing when I am sweating so much from my face and head - I have to dab it off all the time and am lost without a fan. I’m a teacher and I hate being in my room when it’s too warm as I just sweat profusely. I have to pull my hair off my forehead completely - I have short hair and just don’t know what to do.

im going to the doctor tomorrow but would love any suggestions or recommendations for anything I can do to try and control this. I use face powder to try and keep it at bay but would just love to be able to go out and about without worrying about looking a complete mess within minutes. The heatwaves aren’t helping but this can happen any time. I’m always too hot!

Sorry don’t have any advice but following this thread as I’m similar

my upper lip is the worst😩

BotoxOrPuffins · 28/07/2026 23:19

Sorry OP no tips but I feel your pain. it's awful isn't it. I have the same. I recently got a neck fan and it's helped so much.

Have you had your Vitamin D level tested? Heat sweating can be a sign of deficiency

FleetFeets · 28/07/2026 23:43

If it’s new, it could also potentially be antidepressants if you’re on those.

fluffyteach · 29/07/2026 08:13

I’m on fluoxitine but have been for about three years. It’s never been as bad as it’s been the last year - my hand will be wet if I touch the back of my head which is awful.

i have had low vitamin D before so I do take a supplement and make sure I get outside for
a bit - even though I end up sweating when I come back in!

ive managed to get a callback appointment today so we shall see where this goes. I would literally pay good money to have the ability to sweat taken away!! I know it has a purpose but I just hate it.

How is your blood pressure, cholesterol etc. Would ask for a heart health check if you haven't had one.
My "sweaty head" has improved a bit since being put on blood pressure meds and beta blockers - for a problem I never knew I had, until I did.

cupfinalchaos · 29/07/2026 08:18

My mother has this but she’s in her 80’s. I had always assumed it was her heart as she has heart problems but all I know is that it’s so debilitating. Please let us know what the doctor says.

EssCarGo · 29/07/2026 08:20

I had this when I was younger and no doctor or consultant could figure it out. It was incredibly embarrassing.

Eventually I tried acupuncture and it completely put a stop to it; that was 12 years ago and it’s never returned.

MildlyMoist · 29/07/2026 08:21

I developed this as part of my severe perimenopause symptoms - and unfortunately despite being well-controlled by HRT now, this one thing remains.

katmat · 29/07/2026 08:27

My GP prescribed oxybutynin which has been a life saver. Its main purpose is for bladder issues, but can also be prescribed for excess sweating, including facial sweating. Obviously, as with all medication, only take under the guidance of your doctor.

fluffyteach · 29/07/2026 08:52

I am on HRT as well and hoped this would
go away but it’s still there. It’s a running joke at work that I need fans but it’s actually causing me some severe anxiety - I just don’t want to do things because I know I’ll be sweating straightaway. I have to scrape my
hair back off my face with a headband and I feel so self conscious about the back of my
head all the time. Definitely got worse as I’ve got older - I’m 44 now and can’t bear the thought of another heatwave and I dread the summer which isn’t right!

I've had this for years, on and off. It's a bit annoying, but it never occurred to me to see a doctor about it - you just learn to live with it.

dizzydizzydizzy · 29/07/2026 09:02

that sounds most unpleasant. I hope the GP can help.

Maybe your HRT needs adjusting?

Are you feeling very stressed or anxious?

are you overweight?

TippledPink · 29/07/2026 09:05

I am a very sweaty person and have the same- my hair gets so wet easily through sweat, my back is always sweaty. People comment all the time on how sweaty I get. When I play netball others say how sweaty they are and I look at their hairline and it is dry whereas mine is dripping! Liars 😂

I hate it but have never thought anything can be done about it? Update us on what the GP says!

OriginalSkang · 29/07/2026 09:05

I don't have any advice, but I have the same due to taking Vortioxetine. I've been thinking about going to the GP, but I don't want to change my medication and so I'm not sure there's much else they can do

fluffyteach · 29/07/2026 09:10

Just spoken to the doctor - booking me in for
bloods and have also prescribed some heavy duty antiperspirant that she said may help. Will keep you posted.

And I have tried to learn to live with it but when it makes you not want to do anything or go anywhere that’s not fun is it. I want to feel happier and comfortable doing things and going out and about without worrying
about sweating excessively or it dripping off
the hair at the back of my neck.

I’ve managed to deal with some of the more embarrassing elements of the head and face sweating by using some antiperspirant face gel designed for athletes so they don’t sweat into their eyes. I can’t recall the name now and I’ve just had a hysterectomy so I can’t easily get up and find it, but worth a Google. My head still sweats but my long hair hides it to a degree and my face does seem better when I remember to use it under my makeup.

InglouriousBasterd · 29/07/2026 09:54

I have exactly the same and went to the GP - bloods came back as diabetic, which was a massive shock as I have no other risk factors or symptoms. I have an appointment with endocrinology to look at oxybutinin. I really do feel your pain - mine is so excessive and outside of the gym, it’s really embarrassing.

FMLpassthegin · 29/07/2026 10:33

I take Vortioxetine and ADHD meds and they make me sweat A LOT - especially when exercising. I use a hard core anti perspirant called No Sweat to help with this - you need to use it consistently for a few days. I also have one of those 'cool towels' that I stick around my neck which can help. And I use sweat pads under my t shirts to help. You have my sympathy. It's really annoying! I'm menopausal and did some blood tests and found that I actually wasn't' absorbing the oestrogen spray I was using and switched to patches and found that at least the hot flushes have now stopped since changing so it may be worth looking at whether your HRT is working and whether you need to change the type of delivery method you are using.
