Hi, anybody diagnosed with this? Any hints or tips? Have you needed surgery?

Hoping for something positive.

I am diagnosed with it, it's no fun, although there's talk, I've not had surgery yet. Sometimes I'd rather have an ostomy than the pain on loo

What meds have you had.

How long have you been suffering/diagnosed?

My DGD has had problems for 11 years, she’s now 21. Being fobbed off. 17 different meds. Her transit time at last testing was 10 days. Longest time between BM 33 days. Just don’t know what we can do.

No meds but have found things that help

main one is consistency - regime is boring and relentless but I can’t skip a day, if I do it can be a week until I can go again
lots of water, more than you ever think, at least 2l per day, sipping through the day is best
soaked chia seeds 1tbsp mixed with yoghurt, kefir and fresh or stewed fruit
lots of salad veg, easier to eat lots if finely chopped or torn
other fermented foods - sauerkraut, kimchi etc
giving up gluten helped me a lot, worth looking into properly - no barley rye wheat or oats
yoga especially the twists, but also the calming effect

prunes, figs, bran etc had no effect on me, nor citrus.

Oh, and Laxido at the first sign of a slow down - not once concrete has set in

Something that has made a big difference to me (very slow transit) was a gastroenterologist advising very large doses of magnesium. Obviously take medical advice but I’m on about 850mg elemental magnesium a day, as well as Mebeverine. Some say mag citrate best but that just upset my bowel. I am reluctant to take proculapride (sp?) due to side effects potentially impacting another condition. I also do a lot of abdominal massage to move the motions through. I have to be strict with simethicone doses (very regular after each meal) or the gas pain build up significantly. For me low fodmap, gluten free diet and no to low dairy (pretty grim, I know ) also necessary. I empathise, without these measures the pain from trapped wind is agonising. I also can’t eat late, ever, larger lunch and tiny dinner - bowl of cereal type thing. Walking post eating also helps get the bowel moving. Honestly my bowel is a bit of a full time job.

I have this… product of undiagnosed coeliac disease and Ehler’s Danlos gastroparesis. I always have Bisacodyl tablets and suppositories as well as microlax enemas to ensure no build up and blockages can be treated. Bisacodyl works by stimulating bowel contractions and you absolutely must drink lots and lots of water. I would avoid using bulking agents like psyllium, etc as that can make things worse. I have found bread, rice, starchy veggies like potatoes need to be minimised or even temporarily eliminated from my diet when I feel bloated and blocked. Having lots of green veggies and soups is also helpful.

I don't have this but my bowels are a bit of a problem.
As a pp I have found magnesium a huge help.

Gemz1010g · 28/07/2026 08:47

I'm on laxido daily and tried all sorts of meds, nothing really helps.

I've done transit tests and all the markers are in me at the end of the test, my transit time is generally somewhere between 2 and 3 weeks when it's been measured.

I now just plan the day I'm going have a bowel movement and shut myself off from the world on that day and just work through the agony of doing it.

I know how you feel, bowels are a full time job when we suffer with this

I think people often think it’s diet related and have zero concept of how uncomfortable it is and how sick it makes you feel. This morning I have been unable to keep water down and feel like the contents of my digestive trace are becoming more and more toxic.

Yes I'm feeling the same this morning, just so bloated and full
