Hyperthyroidism advice

I was recently hospitilised for a fast heart rate (140 at resting) I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism.

I have been prescribed 20mg Carbimazole, 40mg Propranolol last week. My T4 level was 84 😔 and TSH <0.05. I am still feeling so rough (heart rate is now at 96 so that's improved) my legs hurt and I just want to sleep. How long did it take you to feel better?

Sorry to hear. T4 of 84 is super high. Mine was 30 and I was in very poor shape by the time I was diagnosed.
It took 2 years of titrating the anti-thyroid medication to finally get it on a reliably stable downward trend. I only started feeling more like myself after the end of the first year.
Don't underestimate how much your daily life is contributing to this. I have learned so much about the link between inflammation, stress, diet, gut health and endocrine illnesses. My diet, exercise and sleep are more optimal now. I also take lots of herbal remedies to support the thyroid medication e.g ginseng, reishi tea, hibiscus tea, chaga tea.

I recall my T4 being 45 and TSH zero. 36 years ago. I felt OK except my feet and legs swelled which is what sent me to the Dr. Pulse was 140 and I was sent to hospital for my heart to be checked. It was fine.

I'm pretty sure I was put on 40mg carbimazole, twice daily. It normalised after 3/4 months and I had a sub-total thyroidectomy after 5 months. (Getting married and wanted to start a family and wanted things stabilised).

Only in hindsight could I see I was struggling.

Post st thyroidectomy, all was well. 100mcg levothyroxine for 30 years, upped to 112.5mcg when I turned 60.

Good luck and do join the British Thyroid Foundation. Their resources and support are fab.

Thank you both for sharing your experiences. I really appreciate it so much! It is reassuring to know that things will get better down the line. I will definitely look into herbal supplements as well as join the British Thyroid Foundation

Do you know if they'll test you for autoimmune conditions? I think conditions like Graves respond a bit better to carbimazole than other types of hyperthyroidism. I had a toxic nodule (a benign tumour that pumps out thyroid hormone) and never really felt much better on carbimazole because it kept growing and growing and outwitting the medication. Not saying this to frighten you but sometimes it does require definitive treatment to feel better. I felt a thousand times better post surgery.

@pucelleauxblanchesmains thank you for the reply, yes they're testing for the antibodies so hopefully I will get the result soon! I also have an ultrasound of the Thyroid next week. That's really interesting to know Carbimazole works better if it's Graves Disease. I will ask for an update regarding the blood results. Thank you!
