Has anyone had an insect bite go like this?

I got bitten - pretty sure it was a mosquito- about three weeks ago. It started as just a normal bite but has gone like it looks in the photo. I did an online request with my GP’s this morning and sent the photo, they phoned me and made me an appointment for this afternoon. I don’t usually react to bites much at all.

Ooh, that's nasty and looks infected so hopefully they'll give you some antibiotics.
Some insect bites do get infected, fewer than people think as allergic reaction is often confused with infection, but definitely infected here.

ExquisiteDressing · 29/06/2026 12:15

Not as bad as that but I have had them develop infections (yellow blisters but smaller than yours). Pharmacists can prescribe ABs for these (in England not sure about elsewhere).

Twasasurprise · 29/06/2026 12:32

I wasn't expecting to see that! Glad you have an appointment. I hope it heals soon; it looks very sore.

LIZS · 29/06/2026 14:01

Dh has a often needs antibiotics. Hope yours is ok.

FadedRed · 29/06/2026 14:08

As pp’s say, it’s infected and needs cleaning and dressing properly and you need a course of antibiotics.
Edited to answer your question about if other people have seen this before: when I was a GP Practice Nurse, we have several similar nasty insect bites over the summer, usually cleared up quickly with correct wound care and AB’s.

caringcarer · 29/06/2026 15:39

Yuk. It's got infected and you need antibiotics to clear infection up. You also need a dressing on during the day but leave air to get at it overnight to scab over.

MrsJamin · 29/06/2026 15:43

Just go straight to pharmacist, you shouldn't have left it this long or bothered your GP! Pharmacists can prescribe antibiotics.

MrsJamin · 29/06/2026 15:43

Oh and I had cellulitis from one insect bite, which could have led to sepsis- you can't be too careful.

seanconneryseyebrow · 29/06/2026 18:49

Yup. If it’s a recurring thing take vitamin b and b1 daily (takes a few months to work) and it will stop the fuckers biting u as much or as least having such a big impact. I lived in oz and I had multiple like this regularly until I did that. But for immediate - AB for sure. But start the vits today. Should prevent future one la

momager22 · 29/06/2026 18:51

Oh shit mine get pretty bad but I was not expecting that! What fid the doc say?

I would have, but I’m on immunosuppressants so have to be careful if I get an infection.

Thanks all, he’s prescribed me some antibiotics, dressed it and taken a swab.

For those saying go to the pharmacy, they have strict criteria as to what they can prescribe antibiotics for and this might not meet it - it could be too serious now. I tried three pharmacies but had to go to the Urgent Treatment Centre.

Lararoft · 29/06/2026 21:24

Glad you’ve got antibiotics! I once got a huge blister on my shin with green liquid (ick) caused by I assumed a mosquito bite in the garden. After it burst it turned into a wound & then I had cellulitis on that leg. So I had wound dressings & antibiotics from my gp. I was only about 30 too, so can happen to anyone.
Its the kind of thing that the doctor would absolutely want to see you for.

lljkk · 29/06/2026 21:34

Did you get that bite in UK, OP?

My son reacted similar last week to a bite. Never seen it before. Dr suspected horsefly.
He was put on antibiotics, had it dressed. Today is day 4 of antibiotics and it's much better.

Aviarythebird · 29/06/2026 22:12

I had one summer a few years ago when I kept getting bad infections from
mosquito bits and having to take antibiotics - prescribed by pharmacist. Never happened before. It was only after about the fourth lot when I saw the GP and she said use hibiscrub to wash as there must be something on my skin that it stopped. Not had the problem since.

Was it impetigo?

Iwannachangerealbad · 02/07/2026 18:55

Small lump on back of hand - looks like a clot in a vein. Anyone else had this?

KierkegaardsUnderpants · 02/07/2026 19:20

Jesus, that’s terrible! You poor thing. Fingers crossed that gets sorted asap.

It’s still about the same, he just said it was infected. I’m halfway through my antibiotics now, just waiting for the swab test result it’s not back yet.
, don’t know if that’s a good sign or not.

OP posts:
Yourinmyspot · 06/07/2026 20:54

It’s still not better, but I had a phone call from my GP’s this morning they have given me some different antibiotics based on the swab test they did as it came back as resistant to the ones they gave me last week. So these new ones should do the trick.

Twasasurprise · 06/07/2026 21:03

Yes, fingers crossed!

How are you doing; are you responding well to the new antibiotics?
