Anyone got an eye freckle?

I had a routine eye test last week and the optician asked me if I knew I had a freckle at the back of my eye. I was a bit taken aback as I’ve had numerous eye tests over the years (I’m 53) and nothing has ever been mentioned. He looked to see if it had been noted last time but said not. He’s referred me to the hospital as a routine appointment for them to take an image of it. Said that it’s nothing to worry about but I’m still a bit worried after googling 😳. It does appear it’s quite common though but would still feel better knowing I’m not the only one. I’ve asked people I know but nobody has ever heard of it.

My brother has one. It's monitored every 12 months. So far it's fine and no concerns about it. However he is always careful when outdoors, wears prescription sunglasses and a hat with a brim to protect his eyes.

My ds has one

WobblyLondoner · 22/06/2026 20:47

I have one too. When it was first spotted I was referred for a more detailed scan which confirmed it hadn’t grown. I mention it every time I go to the optician, and they are aware, though tbh I don’t know how able they are to monitor changes. I’ll ask in more detail next time.

Yes I have one, seen at the last 2 eye tests. I haven’t been referred anywhere else and they haven’t really seemed that fussed about it, just recommended to keep having the OCT scans in future to monitor it.

57 and it got picked up at eye test, she asked if anyone had mentioned it before. Quick test at hospital, got to go back in 6 months to see if it’s changed, he didn’t seem worried.

I have one too, blue eyes but a have a brown slice of my iris in just one eye. Opticians never mention it but I did question it last time and they took pictures so they can compare in a few months time. it’s not in any of my under 3 photos and I’m now 41 so deemed to be just a freckle and nothing more sinister which is reassuring. It’s a nice little quirk to have, I’m often stopped by people who notice it!

Yes, I saw an optician in 2018 who spotted it & referred me to the hospital ophthalmologist. They took a picture of it - unpleasant but not terrible - and then I get recalled annually for another pic, to see if it's changed, because it is apparently quite a big one. No change so far...

faeriesandelves · 22/06/2026 22:06

Yes I have one. Picked up at an eye test many years ago. Saw consultant who monitored for a couple of years. That was 20 years ago. I mention when I have an eye test. No big deal at all.

faeriesandelves · 22/06/2026 22:07

He said I would have been born with it. Like a birthmark

OnlyFrench · 22/06/2026 22:08

Several- picked up by an optician 30 years ago. I just take along the pics to each appointment so they can check there’s no change

noblegiraffe · 22/06/2026 22:11

Yep, spotted at the opticians, went to the hospital a couple of times a year apart so they could check it wasn't growing and it was all fine. Not thought about it since and that was years ago.

TheCandidPoet · 22/06/2026 22:13

Just ɓeen to have mine checked again today! One in each eye, one normal, the other one has some 'deposits' on it, which is the reason for the check. Doc says they are age related and nothing to worry about. This is third check in 3 years, she said they'll do one more next year then let me go. No need to worry OP.

liveforsummer · 22/06/2026 22:13

Dd had one aged about 7. Sent to eye hospital then discharged and no further action. She’s 13 now

JumpLeadsForTwo · 22/06/2026 22:17

Yes, just get OCT scans annually at the optician and hasn’t changed so he said I’ve probably had it since birth

IndeedDanielJackson · 22/06/2026 22:24

Dd1 has 1, picked up at optician check. She was monitored at the hospital for a bit then discharged with photos. I have similar but in a cluster in one eye, same story!

Thanks all, that’s out my mind at rest somewhat.
