Left rib and upper back ache, could this be trapped wind?

Is this pain really just trapped wind ? I was diagnosed with IBS last year and for ages was extremely gassy. I cut out certain foods like chocolate and cut down on coffee which helped but now it’s the complete opposite. I keep getting a dull ache under left rib which has gone to my upper back but not extremely painful and comes and goes. But I feel like it’s trapped wind. I had a sudden sharp shooting pain that ran straight under my ribs and it hurt to breath in while it was happening. I then felt like a bubble pop and the pain went! My stomach is gurgling and popping but nothings happening :( any tips would be really useful right about now !

Gallbladder

Was also coming on to say gallbladder!

TheCurious0range · 17/06/2026 22:41

Yep speaking from experience that's your gallbladder

@TheCurious0range I did wonder this but then isn’t the gallbladder on the right side ? Mine is mostly on the left

I've just had something similar but sort of the other way round - pain in upper back, which then moves round to left hand side under ribs, making it uncomfortable to lean back or indeed sit up straight - driving has been really difficult. I went to a physio who observed that I've got a lot of muscle tightness on that side of my body - possibly connected to a rib injury last year. She did some massage of the tight areas and gave me several breathing/stretching exercises to do, and the pain is starting to ease. I've also had a bit of wind, but that seems to be easing off now the back/side is less painful. This might be a coincidence or might be because I'm sitting straighter and that is helping my digestion??

I had whole edge of ribs horrible pain which started at the back, moved on the front and spread out under the rib cage. They tested the stool and it was pilori, took the medecines and have been fine since

to all people with such syptoms, go to the GP first, not physios

Could also be acid reflux - has so many symptoms inc rib pain and back pain which are nerve related.

From personal experience, this was gallbladder. I was also very itchy on my chest, and bloated.
