Mum, 76, had slight pale yellow-whitish vaginal discharge. No odour, no other symptoms. Saw Gyn ANP. Pelvic exam and test results completely normal.

But ANP wants her to use Metronidazole gel anyway - "I would still treat it even though you are negative. The panel only tests for so many bacteria and based on your discharge I would recommend the gel anyway because it is possible that you still have bacteria infection."

I am not in favour of using a medicine that is not needed.

Grateful for any MN thoughts, advice.

Surely your mum can make that decision for herself whether to use the medication or not. Or does she not have capacity for some reason?

If you feel you know more than than the qualified medics, then don't allow mother to use it.

What does your mother want to do? Is she capable of self advocating?
