Renal scan this morning, worried about the journey after drinking a litre of fluids!

I'm going for a renal scan this morning....by bus....and have been told to drink a litre of water an hour before the appointment...2 pints!!!
I'm not sure I'd trust my 58 year old bladder to hold that much, particularly going over potholes.
Looking for advice really, on holding it in!

Get there early and do your drinking there!

Definitely this!

Doyouthinktheyknow · 10/06/2026 10:50

Yes, I couldn’t manage that so would have to go early!

To be honest, there is no way I could hold a litre of fluid without needing a pee anyway! My worst nightmare!

Hope it goes okay.

Yes, definitely bring your litre bottle with you. Get checked in and start drinking an hour before the appt. God I don't envy you trying to hold on to that, but at least you will be THERE and not going over potholes! Hope test goes ok.

And, besides getting there early enough to drink there, check when you get there whether appointments are running roughly to time, otherwise you're running the risk of timing your full bladder for the wrong timeslot and having to start all over... (Don't ask me how I know this...)

This is what I do. I get them yearly just mooch about the hospital shops and sit in the cafe drinking gallonsof water

Thank you so much, ladies 💕
Getting there early is definitely the way to go, I just don't have faith in my bladder being able to hold so much water!

Well, I did it, and my bladder just about held 🤣
But when you're lying down with a full to bursting bladder, and the very last part of the scan is the doctor saying "I'm just going to press down firmly on your bladder now"...oh my goodness, that was a close run thing!

Well done @Hibernatingsloth, your bladder did you proud💐 Mine would have shamed me as it regularly does😳
