I am sooooo angry with my GP?s I could scream ? In fact I think I have done very well not to ??

We?ve been here for about a year now and on 2 occassions have taken DD?s in with either chest or ear infections to be told they were fine, only to go back a week later and be given anti-biotics because they have infact got an infection and clearly weren?t fine ! Following these occasions I have avoided the GP?s like the plague ?..

DD?s have both been snotty, coughing, sneezing and generally coldy for a week now ? they have both been dosed up on Calpol/Calprofen and it?s not improving at all ? They both not have bright green slime (nice !) dripping from their noses constantly and their throats are so sore DD1 is close to tears sometimes, DD2 looks so poorly it?s awful and I can see just by looking in her mouth it?s so red and swollen and I don?t even know what I?m supposed to be looking for ??

Anyway, I?m at work so DH took them to GP?s this morning and was told, they are fine, they?ve got a cough, everyone has ? stop given them calpol/calprofen and try putting them in the bathroom with the hot taps on ? WTF !!!!

I am soooo furious ? I have just rang back and demanded to be seen again this evening.
Am I in the wrong ???? They?ve clearly got an infection or their noses wouldn?t be bright green ? the calpol/calporofen is clearly not clearing up whatever it is they have as it?s been nearly a week now. We are going on holiday on Friday and DH told the GP all of this and just got fobbed off

A lot of people might not agree with me but if you stop giving them the calpol their temps will go up high enough to denature the enzymes in the virus and therefore kill it. Usually very effective.

rebelmum1 · 23/06/2008 12:47

calpol wont help a cold, it just kills pain. Green doesn't mean infection it could be the end of the cold, the stuff that's been sitting about until the body can get rid of it. Antibiotics don't work on viruses.

rebelmum1 · 23/06/2008 12:48

I agree with you sherbetdipdab. I only give calprofen if temp extremely high.

Furball · 23/06/2008 12:52

don't know how old they are but Medised very good for colds - try and get the from 3 mnths (I know) one if you can. Dries up snot a treat.

By the way, my DH has only had 2 courses of antibiotics in his whole life, and has visited the doctor 3 times in his whole life. He's 36 and has the most kick-ass immune system I've ever come across. But of course I'm not advocating that for our kids! The back story was that his mum took him to doctor's once for an immunisation, DH had febrile convulsions and went to hospital. Then she took him to dr for the second time ever for a chest infection when he was 2 or so, dr prescribed penicillin, DH had extreme allergic reaction and was hospitalised. His mum never took him to the dr again - said it caused more trouble than it was worth (yes, she's quite barking, and I don't follow this advice myself!). I took him to dr a couple of months ago. It was VERY difficult to get him through the door. He needed anti-b's - it was amazing how quickly they worked on him, I guess because they were brand new to his system?

He he your dh's mum sounds like me becster

thebecster · 23/06/2008 13:07

Wouldn't mind you for a MIL

Although actually adore my barking MIL and wouldn't swap her. And she is proved irritatingly correct on many an occasion...

getbackinyouryurtjimjams · 23/06/2008 13:13

He he- I wonder if my future DILs will say the same -especially the barking bit (or future DIL- singular-- ds2 says there's no way he's getting married and living with a yucky girl- he is planning to take on ds1 to avoid it )

barnstaple · 23/06/2008 13:33

Noddy, your doc is right though! DD had to do a homework question last term "Why is snot green?" and it's exactly what your doc said.

noddyholder · 23/06/2008 13:58

Thats good!I think he means dark green not the limey yellow stuff that is permanently round the nose of most toddlers.Nice

Beeper · 23/06/2008 15:19

you need to cut out dairy products. And give them orange juice in small amounts over the day. Also bringing down the fever only makes the cold last longer, the fever is the bodys way of burning up the germs, unless they are in danger of convulsing i would let it ride out with just keeping them cool with thin cotton clothes and sponging with tepid water if need be. ABs should only be used in the most desperate of times as the kill both good and bad bacteria and will make you child more likely to pick up other infections while the body is trying to pick itself up after the ABS

AggiePanther · 23/06/2008 15:27

You could try tixylix cough and cold ..that works with my DD.
Oh and goat's milk instead of cow's seems to be less mucus -producing...but generally agree it's likely to be viral and therefore ABs are no good

Well just a little update for you ......

DD1 woke at 12.15 this morning in complete agony, screaming and holding her ear ... by 3.50 she'd still not settled and was getting into a right state and was clearly in agony so I took her to the emergency doctors to be told ........... she's got an ear infection !

We got home at 5.10am and had a snuggle and nap, I'm now at work trying not to fall asleep under my desk and DD1 is catching up on some well deserved rest.

Poor little mite
