Anyone ever had a ureteric stent?

I have just had a ureteric stent put in because of blockage in my ureter, and wow it’s so painful. When I go for a pee I get a burning pain right up into my kidney, and it feels like I still have to go. I’ve been a bit more active today, and this evening my whole kidney and side is aching. Does anyone have experience of these? I presume this is all normal? I’ve been on precautionary ciprofloxacin and take hiprex so I don’t think it’s an infection, I also feel fine. I have the stent for 4 more weeks!

Normal to have discomfort from stent.
Stent is plastic and it takes a few days for body heat to soften plastic and for discomfort to settle.
Normal to want to go to toilet frequently due to stent rubbing on bladder.
Other things that cause bladder irritation- tea, coffee, alcohol, juice, fizzy drinks, chocolate, spicy foods and tomatoes.
if you are running to toilet frequently and it is annoying you, just drink water.
Normal to have blood in urine while stent is in place, the more you do, the more blood you will have.
Also normal to have pain in the kidney when you pee because the bladder can push urine up the stent to kidney as it pushes to empty. This often lasts a minute or two and settles after a few days.
If you develop a fever, sweats and chills, smelly urine, can’t eat or drink or feel unwell, see a doctor.

I’ve had a stent after surgery, it was very uncomfortable but removed after 4 weeks. How long is yours in for?

It’s in for 6 weeks. It’s already been in 2 weeks but I’ve only just had my Foley catheter removed, so this is my first couple of days peeing with it! I’ve also reduced my painkillers as I’m starting to feel more comfortable after the surgery, and that’s meant I’ve also been more active which I’m sure is also contributing.

I had one put in after my hysterectomy because one of the my ureters was ‘squashed’ during the surgery and became blocked. I ended up with a staph infection in my bladder after the hysterectomy, so I actually don’t remember the stent causing me any problems as my post op recovery and the infection were more of an issue. I was fine when the stent was removed as well. I do drink a lot of water and try to stay really hydrated, so that possibly helped. Sorry to hear you’re struggling :(
