Low ferritin

Hi all, started: 210mg ferrous fumarate once a day for low ferritin which is at 15. noticed ridiculous amounts of anxitey and panic attacks 6 days later! Had none of these symptoms before the tablets, only what i would class as normal anxitey. Has anyone else experienced this? Doctor told me to come of them for now, 2 days I haven’t taken them still feeling pretty dreadful. Not sure how long the side effects will take to subside.

Seemingly the shift in how your body uses oxygen as your iron levels rise can cause temporary fluctuations in mood. Maybe, once you feel better, you could start low and slowly titration the dose up.

low ferritin can actually cause anxiety, depression and panic attacks though. So, if you normally suffer anxiety, I’d try to push through treatment but, if it’s really intolerable, you could try iron bisglycinate. It has better bioavailability and fewer gastrointestinal side effects, that may help?

Thanks so much for your reply! I think I’m definitely going to try and adapt the dose! Maybe just slightly too high & my body hasn’t reacted well

Take one on alternate days with orange juice, there is evidence to show that the iron is absorbed better this way....didn't get any of the side effects you describe.
My ferritin was 10 and I took the tablets for 5 months to bring it up to 86
