Has anyone had a painful bony lump on the top of the foot?

As above- I have a hard bony lump on the top of my foot. Was seen by podiatry who have said it is a bony prominence in the 4th/5th metatarsal area, appeared from no where I’ve never noticed it before but my foot has been hurting, and that’s when I noticed it. You can see it sticking up. I’m spiralling a little while I wait for an xray appointment! Just wondering if anyone’s had similar!

I haven’t, but could it be mid-foot arthritis?

Nodirectionhome · 14/05/2026 14:52

I have one.My rheumatologist says it is another bit of arthritis to add to my collection😒

Are they really hard? Mines like a knuckle!

Yes!! I’ve been putting off going to see a Dr but it’s getting more and more painful especially after a long walk, and yes it’s very hard.

I have this. It started to hurt like crazy during lockdown and I was sent for an x ray and told it was arthritis. I was horrified to be told there was nothing I could do BUT in fact, six years later, the lump is still there but no pain.

I am not saying this will work for everyone but I used socks with toes and toe separators. Not only did these stop my bunion from hurting, but it also stopped the lump pain.

I do have problems pulling boots like uggs on - the lump is pronounced and hasn't gone away, just the pain.

I've had one for probably a couple of years, it's not at all painful though so I haven't seen a doctor about it.

Try changing your lacing technique- basically go up the side of laces and miss the lump- does help

My mum has this is hers is a form of arthritis. There are certain shoes she can't wear now due to the growth.

I have really bad health anxiety (had cbt didn’t work!) and I’ve had loads going on with other things like my tummy/ibs symptoms and bleeding (I’ve been referred to colorectal so I’m dealing with that) so I’ve somehow managed to link that with this lump on my foot and convinced myself it’s something serious! I’ve also lost about a stone on the last few weeks (I’m quite overweight and I’ve been busy/stressed/not eating much so I’m sure it’s probably that) so I’m just having a bit of a crappy time!
Glad to hear others have a foot lump and it wasn’t serious. Mine feels fixed to the bone!

I’ve had this for about a month. Haven’t been to the doctor about it yet as it seems to ease a bit and then flare up again. I think it was caused by wearing sliders for a week on holiday and having my toes in a slightly unnatural position while walking. I’ve diagnosed myself with cuboid syndrome but should probably get checked out properly if it doesn’t go soon.

Mrsworried1 · 14/05/2026 21:41

Im surprised at how many people have this I feel a bit better! My whole foot really hurts on a night so no idea what’s going on!

I had one when I was a teenager it developed a patch of thickened skin over it and it was painful. I was sent for an x-ray and was told it was a "bone elevation" and that I would have to live with it. I don't really remember when or how but it just disappeared one day never to return. I am guessing it was actually a ganglion cyst but no idea why it was diagnosed as a bone elevation.

Cherryocherryo · 14/05/2026 23:10

It’s on the top and more or less in the centre, maybe a little further up towards the ankle than toes. It throbs and feels hot after a lot of walking.

Mrsworried1 · 15/05/2026 10:47

Had my xray and no obvious fracture. Just have to wait for the results now- could be weeks! Wish I wasn’t a worrier…
