Moving house and was unboxing a new knife block with knives, taking the protective coating off the blade and went straight through my finger. I'm freaking out. Does this need stitches. And will I bleed to death. Ffs. Don't look if your squeamish!

Wrap it up and if the bleeding doesn't stop you may need to get it stitched up. Not sure how long bleeding should go on why don't you call and ask a medical information help line? Google says 10-15 minutes. Unless bone or fat is showing, in that case just go in for stitches.
Hope it stops quickly.

Have you got any steri strips to hold it together?? If the bleeding doesn't stop I would contact out of hours service (111) etc. Good luck!

It's just a palava isn't it to call up, answer loads of questions. It's late at night, I've got a kid in bed etc etc

No lol it is bleeding quite profusely. Looks to be some fatty tissue or something visible.

There is some yellow, whitish fleshy tissue showing. It's pretty grim

@Downtherabbithole34 time to call for help methinks. If its that deep I would get it seen

MurkyMo · 14/05/2026 09:22

Ooooh that looks deep. How did you get on last night?

BauhausOfEliott · 14/05/2026 09:30

Personally I’d just wrap that up.

Dizzydrizzy · 14/05/2026 09:41

How’s it looking today? It might need properly cleaning and steri stripping

I don't know, it looks very deep, I'm thinking a stitch or 2 and an antibiotic of one sort or another would be a good idea.

If you haven’t gone, get some steri strips and stick them on. They are miraculous. And tbh if your knives are that good, you’ll probably need a pack in your cupboard anyway!

minipie · 14/05/2026 10:23

DD had a very similar cut recently and I did end up taking her to A&E. Of course it stopped bleeding while we were waiting!

It didn’t need stitches but they had a good poke around to check the tendons (or maybe something else? Not sure) hadn’t been damaged. So don’t feel silly about getting it checked out.

Do you have a minor injuries unit near you as can be a lot easier than a&e?

Downtherabbithole34 · 14/05/2026 12:01

Barged into minor injuries, told them I was bleeding to death and felt like I was gonna pass out 😂 it's in an awkward place on the joint. So it just kept bleeding. Anyway, cleaned, iodine patch and some stitches. All bandaged up now. Yikes.

The knives are hidden up in a cupboard never to be seen again 😂😂 I have a sen child too so best to be safe.
