Swollen optic nerve

had a routine eye test where the optician noticed a swollen optic nerve in only one eye. has anyone else had this and what was the outcome? I am a 33 year old female with a high BMI. Everything I’m reading says high intracranial pressure is always both eyes so I’m worried I have a tumour or something!

hi, I had this years ago.

there are some very scary diagnoses that come with it, but this was back in the days when the NHS was funded and worked well, so I was lucky enough to have the scariest things ruled out fairly quickly.

it hasnt recurred (it was in my early 20s) and my vision returned fine within three months (I had blurring and found it difficult to read at distance) but I have not had to wear glasses til I was in my 40s and whilst my optic nerve looks a little paler apparently than the other one and I think my peripheral vision wasn’t great in my early 20s, I come up as “normal” in every way in eye tests.

I hope your outcome is similar

@captainmouthwash thats good to hear!

I have suffered with headaches all my life but they have been more frequent lately. I always convince myself I have the worst case scenario and google suggests if it’s only one eye it would indicate a tumour rather than increased brain pressure so I’m super worried!

I went to the Optician for a scan when I was concerned my Uveitis had returned. I should have gone to the emergency eye clinic which is what I would do now.
the Optician told me both of my optic nerves were swollen and twisted, nothing to do with Uveitis it was caused by pressure in my head and not my eyes. he said he suspected a tumour.
it was my Uveitis, hospital appointment the next day and steroid drops….no brain tumour.
please don’t Google and don’t panic. If you don’t already have one make an appointment at your local hospitals emergency eye clinic. They will advise you.
good luck

I had this before and it was Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension. I had headaches, swelling of the optic nerve.
