Persistent mouth ulcer near wisdom tooth for six weeks, GP or dentist?

I’ve had a shallow mouth ulcer along one of my wisdom teeth for about 6 weeks. At first I wasn’t worried but it’s still very painful and seems very stubborn! I hate all things dental. Do I need to see a doctor or a dentist at this point? It doesn’t look too bad (I don’t think) but it just won’t die.

I have a persistent problem with the roof of my mouth becoming raw in the same place - GP didn't want to know - dentist has been excellent and monitored and Xrayed, however I did have to go privately as I was on of the many thousands turfed off the NHS list during Covid.

Yep dentist 😊

Dentist. If it's painful it obviously needs assessing and sorting.

Creepybookworm · 04/05/2026 18:54

Dentist. Are you sure it's an ulcer and not a sign of infection at the root of the tooth?

Ritaskitchen · 04/05/2026 18:55

Dentist. I would also ask for a referral to dental hospital to check for cancer. Sorry to be scary. I have a relative with mouth cancer it’s most definitely discounted sooner rather than later.

Dentist.

MrCheeze · 04/05/2026 19:04

I was afraid you’d all say that! Will book a dentist appointment tomorrow.

@Creepybookworm I think it’s an ulcer. It hurts to touch it and when eating salty/ acidic things. The tooth feels fine.

@Ritaskitchen I hope your relative is ok. I was hoping it can’t be oral cancer because it looks so inoffensive. Better to get it checked though I agree.
