On day 4 of treatment:
PPIs and 2 types of antibiotics
Yesterday after my second dose of PPI my stomach bloated to the point of looking pregnant, then I had horrendous pains all evening.

I was scared to take the second dose of antibiotics and could hardly mange any dinner. Took them before going to bed, as I obviously want to avoid antibiotic resistance… then about an hour and 15 mins later puked my guts up.

Absolutely exhausted this morning and scare to take the next dose of PPIs.

Has anyone had this? What should I do?

Aren’t the instructions for the ppi’s to take on an empty stomach and the antibiotics to take with food?
If you are taking them before bed without food, and then lying down, I imagine that will have had an effect.

Seek advice from your GP immediately not from random people on the web.

Hope you feel better soon.

SpringAndSunshineIsHere · 02/05/2026 13:11

Took as instructed
GP not opening until Tuesday

Pharmacists will be open. I'd keep taking the medication, as instructed.

As with all medication, including non-prescription ones, read the leaflet that you get with them.

SpringAndSunshineIsHere · 02/05/2026 13:36

Thanks. Went to the pharmacy and am trying a different make of PPIs.

Good. Hope they're not as unpleasant. Take care Flowers

SpringAndSunshineIsHere · 03/05/2026 07:19

So, the same thing happened yesterday with different PPIs.
I was in pain with a huge belly again and feeling really nauseous before the second antibiotics - manages a small amount of food and took the pills then went to a walk in hospital clinic as Drs are still closed.

The nurse there said it’s not an unusual reaction and it means it’s working. Better to plough through and complete the treatment. If I manage to keep pills down for an hour then they should be absorbed.

I threw my guts up again on the way home 😢

I’m feeling so exhausted and pissed off that I have to take these bloody meds for three more days. It’s horrible.

Over halfway there now!
Have you got probiotics for afterwards? I would have thought that would be helpful.

I was telling sons about stomach ulcers recently. They had obviously never heard of that as an illness related to stress and a high pressure lifestyle, as we now understand H Pylori better. In the 80s, ‘slow down, you’ll get an ulcer’, or similar, was common idea.
Unpleasant though the treatment is, at least it’s better than the illness!

(please excuse my very basic knowledge, if I’ve got it wrong!)

If it doesn’t work due to throwing up then this might work for you.

I used a 5 day natural treatment, no PPIs and got rid of mine without any problem. Retested negative. https://www.toxaprevent.co.uk/products/h-pylori-health-pack

Well HP is a bacteria you pick up somewhere along your life. Lots of people have it without symptoms.

It seems that it needs heavy antibiotics to clear it. Although after this experience I would happily try an alternative treatment - thanks for posting! 🙏

Agree that eating at the right time as instructed for the antiB is the key. Although you might be having a reaction to a type of AntiB. Which ones are you taking?

I'm with you. I have just finished a two week course of quadruple therapy for HP. OMG I hated the thought of it. But I scraped through with a touch of nausea, feeling very full and constipation (I thought it would be the other way around!).

The relief when I finished the last drug on the list was immense. I hope it's gone for good now. I'll be tested in a few weeks time.

I was taking Bismuth, Doxycycline, Esomeprazole and Metronidazole. They are hefty anti Bs! I'm trying to remember to take the probiotics now, but I feel absolutely fine now three days post finishing. So fingers crossed.

OP you might be able to get anti nausea stuff to take like Motilium. Ask the pharmacy in case it might interfere with the other meds.

Wow! Well done for doing 2 weeks!

Am taking probiotics in the middle of the day, so not too close to the AntiBs.

I’m on a PPI, Amoxicillin and Clarithromycin twice a day for a week.

The Dr said it’s actually better to be sick if you need to be. It’s just the horrendous bloating and pain beforehand that’s getting me down. It’s tiring.

Have been eating bland stomach friendly foods and nothing seems to help.

Today I had:
Breakfast - plain greek yogurt 0% and banana

snack jacobs cream cracker

a bit more yogurt and some fresh papaya - which apparently helps digestion

some plain rice, egg, tofu and courgettes

All very small portions - as have been advised to eat little and often.

Cross my fingers it all stays down today- it’s been bad around the second dose for the last 2 days.

I hope your infection has cleared 🤞
