Do I take antidepressants or try and beat it on my own?

My anxiety is bad at the minute.
Well it has been for 6 months now.
It’s mostly health anxiety but I’ve also developed a fear of choking
Lots of anxiety symptoms ,blurry eyes, panicking ,worrying I’m gonna faint
worrying I have cancer and illness
Im avoiding eating certain things.
I go to Mexico in 8 weeks and want to have a lovely time.
I have a GP appointment in 2 weeks and he’s already said he thinks sertraline is the way to go.
Do I start this on a low dose or try and fight it without the medication ?

How old are you? Am so sorry you are suffering. Meds can really help; what is the resistance? (And am asking your age because if you could be perimenopausal HRT might be a good starting point: totally changed my anxiety).

Try the medication. And remember that if it doesn't work (enough) there are different strengths to try first, then there are lots and lots of different types of medications that could help instead.

I have to do it alone as I react badly to all meds (including paracetamol and ibuprofen) and it is very, very tough to do.

I’m late 30s
i did the silly thing of reading people’s side affects online and videos on YouTube
So I’ve gave myself fear before I even try them
Which I know is silly to do

Take antidepressants they're life changing don't suffer more then you need to

mumofoneAloneandwell · 25/04/2026 11:36

Get down that gp for a dose of sertraline and enjoy your life girl xx

SisterTeatime · 25/04/2026 11:36

Take them! You’ll feel better. Then you can work on your anxiety. You seem to have quite good insight. Try Claire Weekes. Her method is absolutely life-changing. But the medication will help you get to a place where you can recover. Good luck.

There are no prizes at the end, no matter which way you go. I went for the sertraline and peace ❤️

I also have health anxiety and it has helped so much.

Even with the meds you will still be ‘doing it on your own’ so to speak, think of it as you’re in the sea and the meds just provide a life jacket to stop you going under.

for me the medication has been life changing. I did have sided effects on my meds but they don’t last for ever.

good luck with whatever u decide to do, anxiety is awful!

I went to the gp last year hoping to get antidepressants and they refused to prescribe them saying new evidence shows they are not effective. Sigh. Some how still hear after a course of CBT which did help a little. Good luck op, hope you get the help you need.
