Low WBC with gastroenteritis?

Hi there,

I am a 32 y/o mum who has recently (Monday) got gastroenteritis of my 2y/o. I was pretty much vomiting night Monday and stopping Tuesday morning but had persistent diarrhea since (sorry tmi). I got bloods taken yesterday and my WBC was apparently “low” and CRP was slightly elevated (15) which I was advised was all indicative of a viral infection. I am a chronic worrier though and the low WBC has raised alarm bells in my head. The dr didn’t give me the amount, just that it was low but wasn’t concerned enough to keep me in. I have been feeling really depleted since Monday and today has been the most I’ve ate so far.

has anyone else experienced this, in terms of low WBC while a viral infection is ongoing, is it normal? I always thought it elevated them so just looking for reassurance really!

In this context “low” could mean “not elevated”. Without numbers and an exact clinical picture you won’t get good advice here . Best and safest option is to contact your GP again for a discussion

Not uncommon for WCC to drop with viral infection. That's what happens when you do bloods in self limiting illness...puck up minor abnormalities which are normal. No way would I have done bloods 3/4 days into a viral infection.

Thanks both for the reply!

Spoke to my GP and they confirmed WBC was 3.5 and they like it between 4-11?

They have also sent me for repeats in 5 weeks time.
