Upper right abdominal pain (dull pain) and strange smelling wee.

Bit of a health question and yes, before anyone says it — please don’t bother telling me I shouldn’t be asking randoms on the internet. I know. I’m just looking for similar experiences while I figure out what to do next.
I went to the GP last week because I’d been having a diffuse vague abdominal pain and slightly loose stools. They requested bloods and a stool sample, and I’m currently waiting on the results.

Since then things have changed a bit. My stools are now back to normal, but the pain has shifted. It’s no longer diffuse — it’s now more localised in the upper right quadrant, just under my bottom rib. It’s a mild but persistent ache rather than severe pain.
Also, new symptom: my urine smells quite foul, although the colour looks normal. Drinking plenty.

Has anyone had something similar where symptoms sort of “moved” like this? Especially the right-sided rib pain after tummy issues? Haven’t yet decided whether to request further medical attention before getting the first load of test results back. I’m not curled up screaming in agony but the foul-smelling urine is very strange. it doesn’t burn when I pee or anything like that.

I do have back pain, but I have pretty much permanent back pain on the RHS anyway so it’s very unclear!

I am 40 and don’t drink . No other health issues.

Experiences welcome and thank you.

have you done 101 nhs form? There’s a specific option for pee/poo and it might give you more of an idea

hope the test results come back well for you

Smelly wee was the first sign of UTI for me. I had no other symptoms at all, just foul smelling wee.

I don't know what the upper quadrant pain is. But think of what organs are around there, liver, gall bladder and so on.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 18/04/2026 20:42

Does your wee smell like anything specific (sorry!) like fish, garlic, rotten egg?

Missrosie123 · 18/04/2026 20:45

Foul smelling wee was a sign of a UTI for me. I didn’t have any other symptoms that time. Previous UTIs I’ve had stomach, back and side pain.

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 18/04/2026 20:45

just a thought, you haven’t eaten any asparagus recently have you? That makes your wee stink and asparagus is just coming into season now.

Plankton89 · 18/04/2026 20:46

The strange smell … it’s hard to pin down. I know this isn’t helpful. It’s not fishy or garlicky or rotten egg… it smells unlike strong / dehydrated urine. It sort of just smells a bit rank. I’ll try and be more specific next time I go for a wee.

and thanks for replying.

oh and I will try the 101 form thank you

Gallstones? My wee went strong and orange

Noras · 18/04/2026 20:48

Hard to say - it’s in the area of your liver and pancreas.

SadSaq · 18/04/2026 20:53

@Plankton89 maybe try 111 not the police 😉
I hope you get some answers. I know what it's like having mysterious pains. Worrying.

Contrarymary30 · 18/04/2026 20:58

I thought gall stones . The pain is right where you describe . An ultrasound would be useful .

Maia77 · 18/04/2026 21:17

Gallbladder issues. Doesn't necessarily mean gallstones. I have biliary dyskinesia, where sometimes gallbladder doesn't contract properly. Gallstone type pain but no gallstones.

MabelsBeats · 18/04/2026 21:19

Gallstones, or at the least gallbladder issues. As others have recommended, get an ultrasound asap.

My dad had similar symptoms; loose stools, vague abdominal pain (mostly early morning), smelling urine. as time went on urine also got some blood in it (brownish, not red). Turns out it is a kidney stone (confirmed through ct scan and cystoscope) and because it's too big to pass it will be removed surgically.

Allseeingallknowing · 18/04/2026 21:27

101 is the police non emergency number! I think you mean 111

Lifelover16 · 18/04/2026 21:31

Could be a kidney issue - an upper UTI or kidney stone?
Do you feel feverish or otherwise unwell?
I think you need to ask 111 - you could be offered an out of hours GP appointment.

user2848502016 · 18/04/2026 21:39

Upper right quadrant could be gallbladder pain. Perhaps gallstones/infection. That could affect your urine.
Call 111 tonight and stress upper right quadrant pain and hopefully you can be seen

Additup · 18/04/2026 21:40

This sounds like gall stones to me. Was your wee brownish and your loose poo pale in colour?

I suffered two years ago from a kidney infection , right side under ribs and urine smelt strong. Urine test confirmed and three days of antibiotics resolved it.
