Thinking of having one but wondering what it is like to have one fitted. Advice please!

I got one, not sure what it's called, but it's one that stays put for up to 8 years and has no hormones or anything on it???
What you want to know?
What is was like to have it fitted or what it's like to have it up there????

strawberriesandcream01 · 18/06/2008 21:16

What was it like when you have it fitted? I know there is one with hormones on it that I might be interested in!

the hormone one is called mirena and is more effective as birth control, but some people report unhappy side effects.
the non hormone one stays in for up to 8 yrs but if you havnt had a baby before it can be quite painful during periods (tho if youre on here, i doubvt thats relevent).

ive had both.

Amphibimum · 18/06/2008 21:19

fitting is really easy - they do it at docs surgery and is more or less like a smear.

bonniefromboot · 18/06/2008 21:19

well.....
Not actually that exciting tbh. Was told to take 2 paracetamol before which I did. Was about 8 weeks after ds born. Basically you lie on couch same as having smear test and they put the speculum (sp) thing in (same as smear test) then there was a bit of fiddling around and a small amount of pain - bit like having a blood test so far as I remember, it stung a bit. Then got up, got dressed and went home .
Oops nearly forgot, had smear test at same time (might as well while we're up there, said the doctor ).
The smear test was probably same level of discomfort.
Not sure if that helps...

I had the mirena coil fitted. TBH it was very painful to have it put in. I did'nt realise this was the case and drove home feeling very uncomfortable.

I've had it in over five years now (doctor says to leave it a couple more as I should be covered due to my age!) Its been great and trouble free. Get very light periods. I did bleed a lot a first though.

Divastrop · 18/06/2008 21:23

the mirena was quite painful being fitted i found as it is larger than the IUD.i have nothing nice to say about that thing though

i am on IUD no.4 now and i would say they were just slightly uncomfortable to have fitted(though this can be halped by taking ibuprofen in advance).its like having a smear but with a bit more poking around.

my periods were heavier for the first 4 months but are back to normal now and i have no problems with this one sofar(had it for a year)

Amphibimum · 18/06/2008 21:23

boot in the lake district?

Remotew · 18/06/2008 21:23

Good idea to take some pain killers half an hour before the appointment. I would have if I'd known.

bonniefromboot · 18/06/2008 21:25

strawberries, i chose to have non-hormonal one because i didn't want the hormones (sure i had a good reason at the time).
My periods have been very heavy and the first 6 months when they came back after having ds they were painful. DS is now 2 and periods have settled down. Might be a consideration, I mean the bonus of having the lighter periods?
But overall I'm happy with what I have got.

Divastrop · 18/06/2008 21:25

i didnt know there was a boot in the lake district

ChicaLovesBranstonPickle · 18/06/2008 21:27

I had the copper coil fitted before I had had any children, so never gone through labour etc. I have to say it hurt a lot. I almost fainted. But it only lasted a few seconds.

My periods were a little heavier, and slightly painful, but nothing excessive.

I wish I'd known about taking a painkiller before.

bonniefromboot · 18/06/2008 21:27

confused now about boot in lakedistrict???

DettaJnr · 18/06/2008 21:28

I had the Mirena fitted 3 weeks ago but had it done under GA as was having a hysteroscopy (look around) and scrape. I haven't read the side effects as I suspect that once I know them I shall have them!!! Having said that I haven't stopped bleeding since it has been put in and have a distended/bloated stomach. I look about 4-5 months pregnant!!! I am hoping this will settle.

Amphibimum · 18/06/2008 21:32

theres a place called boot in the lake district , a oner street town i know from childhood holidays and i thought that bonniefromboot might be from there... irrelevent really, sorry! as you were...

strawberriesandcream01 · 18/06/2008 21:33

Thanks for all your replies. I have heavy periods and painful periods at the mo anyway, don't know if I could handle heavier ones! I was thinking about going on th pill but I went on one years ago and it turned me into a monster so bit scared of it!

OP posts:
bonniefromboot · 18/06/2008 21:33

sorry, not that exciting. I'm actully from Bute but dd calls it boot...
Bit sad really but how do you choose a name?
Liking yours amphi, are you a frog fan?

bonniefromboot · 18/06/2008 21:35

Strawberries, that's one reason I didn't want the hormones after being on the pill for years. Maybe you should go to family planning and ask for some advice. I was amazed by the range of different stuff they had when I went. If you raise your concerns they may be able to recommend something suitable.
I think, the hormone levels in the coil are much lower than in the pill, but might be wrong?

Amphibimum · 18/06/2008 21:42

the mirena (hormone one) mostly makes periods lighter and mine disappeared altogether.

but if you had a reaction to hormonal birthcontrol before then you might not like having it in you 24/7.

i had my mirena removed because i was horribly depressed (even tho i had no periods which was great)... whether the mirena was doing it or not, i'll never know but once its there in your mind,...

Amphibimum · 18/06/2008 21:43

oh sorry bonnie - thats not sad
my name was given to me by the lovely habbibu after i was waxing lyrical about my water births one night... s'nice huh? [froggy grin]

bonniefromboot · 18/06/2008 21:46

Yeah, I like that!!
I got mine from some other suggestions, was supposed to be something like bonnie and clyde because we live close to the clyde... but didn't turn out quite like that!

strawberriesandcream01 · 18/06/2008 21:52

I was very depressed from being on the pill also. Im not sure of the one I was on but i know there are lots of different ones.

Hi Strawberries, I got the Mirena fitted at the end of May, was a little painful whilst fitting (a minute or so) then dull period pain for a day or so after. You have to get it fitted during or at the end of a period, and around here at the fpc, you have to have the coil counselling to make sure you are right for it. I'm not a fan of hormonal contraception after messing up the pill and having the injection years ago, but it seemed a good option for me, plus lighter periods are always nicer.
What I wish I'd have known is how long you bleed for afterwards, I've only just stopped bleeding 3 weeks later, the doc said you'll bleed for a bit, I though she meant 2 or 3 days not weeks!

Amphibimum · 18/06/2008 22:02

if you were depressed on the pill then personally, id avoid the mirena. it is a lower dose (a tiny dose) but its constant and ... well, even thinking it might cause more depression might be enough to do it iyswim (??)

id go for the normal coil and accept the risk of pg... i think normal coil is something like 97% effective... my mum used to tell me (she is a mw) that she delivered more than one baby with a coil in its hand, so i dunno how much you can really rely on it... depends how 'fertile' you are i guess??

oldcrock · 18/06/2008 22:10

I've had both normal coil and Mirena. It was more painful having one coil out and another in, longer being prodded about I suppose...

Mirena coil has been fine for me, although I had major misgivings due to all the horror stories you hear about it. I have put on weight with it though, but in general PMT has reduced and I hardly have any periods (occasionlly v light bleeding).

The normal coil caused slightly heavier periods but otherwise also fine.
