Random ear popping for weeks

AlwaysAnxious32 · 01/04/2026 21:36

I've been getting a weird popping in my ears very randomly, even when I'm just sat at night doing nothing, it's not always the same ear, it switched between the two. There's no sounds, pain, anything like that, it's like a weird popping, only last a second or so. I've been getting it for a few weeks now, I originally thought nothing of it, I was at the drs last week on an unrelated note, looked in my ears, said they were fine. It's been happening again tonight, after a Google, I came across some posts saying it could be an aneurysm 🤷 I'm health conscious and this has sent me into a spiral. Does anyone know what this might be that's not a bloody aneurysm, just so I can calm myself down!! Feeling a bit scared and like a big baby.

I'm mostly happens at night, literally when I'm just sitting doing nothing. Does this fit with that? I've had a quick Google and I would expect it to be happening alot more of it was that. It's like a pulsating and then a pop in quick succession.

Might be just an excess of wax. Try a few drops of olive wvey evening and then possibly ear syringing, although I don’t think the NHS does that any more.

I clean my ears every day with a cotton bud, and I've done it again tonight and no wax came out at all.

you mean one of those sticks with cotton wool
in the end? You push the wax further down with them.

Does it feel worse when it's quiet? I've just got into bed and I had a random hiccup and I ekt this big swoosh/pop, kind of pulsating in my ears too. Again, gone within a second.

It's worrying me as I've had some pulsating, like a heartbeat feeling in my ears when laying at night and after a Google it says all these things could point to a vascular change, pressure in the brain, narrowing arteries etc. I've scared myself silly.

Yes and sometiems feels like I’m on a plane and my ears have popped

whisplow · 01/04/2026 22:41

I’ve had it for 15 years and not croaked it from an aneurysm yet.

Yes like that but a bit more subtle and gradual if that makes sense

Interesting. I do get a crack on occasion when I yawn and sometimes when I'm eating or I open my mouth really wide, my jaw clicks alot as well. I just did the biggest yawn and I felt it in my ears, a crack and then a subtle pop

I’ve had this and saw specialist - was just ear wax. Recommended saline nasal spray every day which stopped it

First of all stop using cotton buds - especially every day! This sounds like eustacian tube dysfunction. You can buy a device called otovent to unblock them. Its like a little ballon that you blow up with your nose and it opens up the tubes.

Thank you, I'll look into that 🙂

It can be to do with wax. Also if you have a build up of wax and water from a shower gets stuck behind it. Why dont you go and get your earwax removed by suction. It's painless. Cleaning with a cotyon bud is not a good idea and doesnt help get rid if the wax deep down.
