Dry socket - ow!

I’m 12 days post molar extraction and was confirmed on day 5 that I have dry socket. Dentist dressed it twice. I went back on Friday and saw a different dentist (mine wasn’t working) and she said the dressing was still intact and she wanted to leave it. She said the pain I was experiencing is normal. I’m taking OTC co-codamol but it’s only taking the edge off. I can’t take anti-inflammatory drugs. I’m doing the salt rinses and applying gengigel. I’m wondering when it will get better or if I should be going back to the dentist again? It’s really sore! Would appreciate anyone with experience or working in the dental field.

I would go back. I wouldnt accept that its normal pain- I was told this and it absolutely wasn't the case. It got so bad I ended up at an out of hours clinic where there did some kind of flush out with what tasted like corsodyl, and whatever they did made the world of good. I remember the glasses they make you wear steaming up from trying to hold in my tears! Do not accept that this is normal!

Took about a week after packing and taking antibiotics to hurt less and 2 full weeks before I gave up the painkillers

It’s a week since it was first packed/dressed and the pain is almost as bad as last week. I can see there’s still some of the dressing there but also some of it exposed.
Okay l’ve just dosed up for tonight but I’ll call the dentist again in the morning. Thanks.

I have never known pain like the dry socket I had. They told me it was normal & I had no treatment at all but it did resolve after about a week. You need to go back. Sending sympathy and an unmumsnetty hug xx

I had a lower molar extraction on 3rd March the pain kicked in that night and every day after….I saw the dentist on the 10th march where he confirmed it was dry socket and he washed it out and applied a dressing with medicine ..it helped and brought the pain down to about a 3/4 out of 10 but the pain stayed like that so I saw the dentist again last Thursday nine days after the dressing and sixteen days after extraction I was literally going mad.
He washed it out again he said there was food caught in the extraction site and after sixteen days the pain was gone I swear I’ll never have a tooth out again!
You have my sympathies op I know exactly how your feeling it nearly drove me nuts with the pain… I was surviving on paracetamol I was getting worried I’d overdosed I’d took so much..ring the dentist again op and try to get seen tomorrow infact insist.

Ouch pippapipps!
I’ve called the dentist and I’m back in this morning. I’ve not had antibiotics and I think I may need some! Will update later.

Good luck op I hope you get some relief .. I asked for antibiotics I was sure it was infected because the pain was off the scale but apparently not it was just dry socket..one of the worst pains I’ve ever had

Thought I’d update. It was last dressed on Friday and the dentist said it was about 70% healed and she didn’t think I’d need to go back. It’s fully clotted now and I’m definitely on the mend. I still need painkillers but not bang on when they were due, so that’s progress. I’ve now got a 5 day weekend so I can relax!
