What in Earth is this (persistent) cough?

I had a cold weeks ago. I feel pretty much completely fine now. An occasional bit of sneezing BUT

I have an incredibly annoying persistent cough. Coughing up clear mucus, much worse when lying down, dreadful at night. Almost choking cough.
Up and about during the day, nothing for hours on end. Change of temperature coming indoors after the school run sets it off. I'm trying all sorts, cough syrup, lozenges etc to try and calm it down.

What could be going on? Should I contact my GP?

Yes. If not settling do. Probably just post viral but best to get checked out. You may need a chest xray

You are a sweetheart to reply, thank you.

Have you tried antihistamines?
mine has just started up, I think it’s caused by tree sap or something.

Hi OP, I too have had a cough for weeks - in fact since Christmas eve, after a bad cold. Unlike you, I am ok when asleep and much better in the morning but it gets worse through the day. I went to the doctor about 3 weeks ago who could hear rumbles in my lungs and gave me antibiotics which made no difference, so it must be viral. Still going. Just sharing in case it's some bug doing the rounds.

But I think if no-one's listened to your chest, you should perhaps go to the gp.

Oh god I’ve got the same! And after a horrible cold type thing as well. My cough is dry but relentless 😭😭😭😭😭😭 it’s better at night though - just horrendous during the day

I’ve just booked a gp appointment as I have this too, had it since before Christmas and it’s doesn’t seem to be going anywhere , so annoying.

sellthebigissue · 19/03/2026 22:17

Hopefully you feel better soon and it settles down. Coughs can be persistent! X

It couldn’t be a mild dose of whooping cough could it? That starts with a relatively mild cold and then the cough takes hold a you bring up thin, clear mucus with it. It was rife 2 years ago but I haven’t heard if there’s much about this year. Usually you know if you have it because the cough is unlike any cough you’ve ever had before, but some of my friends had it mildly and it was nowhere near as bad as my bout (which I genuinely thought was going to kill me).

Definitely make an appointment to see your GP. You may get sent for a chest x-ray. GP might want to rule out pneumonia.
