ive coughed myself hoarse, infact more than hoarse my voice is barely a whisper only the occasional squeak if I try to force it. Other than not talking is there anything I can do to fix it?

I’ve got a chest infection and coughed so much I’ve completely lost my voice. I talk all day at work so when my voice gave out I had to leave early and will probably be off sick today but my team are extremely (and I really do mean extremely) understaffed so I feel guilty being off and I’ll be judged for it. I’ve not spoken since I left work at lunchtime but my test talking shows that’s not helped at all.
is there a quick fix?

I don't think so. You'll be stuck like this for a bit. You know monks practice this in an effort to attain enlightenment. Have your thoughts slowed down, sped up, changed in any way or are they the same ? Just curious

How can you be judged for losing your voice?

That's a toxic workplace, you deserve a new job when you feel better!

You need rest, warm drinks, unfortunately it can take time. Read the NHS pages about when to see a GP.

Thank you @Arregaithel i’ll have a look and try the things i’m Not doing already.
it’s definitely worse this morning, phoning in sick was fun! The poor woman on the other end of the phone was guessing every word I said!

judged is maybe the wrong word. Resented might be more like it. I don’t feel overly unwell so if I could speak I’d be fine being in work and I was my usual happy self when I was in yesterday so there will be some people that think I’m “at it” and I could just force myself to speak.

@ThatFairytheres definitely no enlightenment! I’m frustrated and bored not talking. I’m making up for it with lots of texting!

I had this…..no voice for weeks then raspy then back to normal and then no voice again. Ongoing since July. Seen by ENT, all investigations fine, started on PPI and it’s got better. Obviously I don’t plan to be on omeprazole for long but I’m now looking at diet changes and losing a bit of weight to help the reflux side. Could be a similar issue for yourself?

I had a bad cold/chesty thing a few weeks ago and lost my voice, I had nothing barely even a whisper and had to phone in to work, and rest my voice, plenty fluids and rest helped massively. (I’m a nurse so my job involves lots of talking) also don’t want to share my virus about. Hope your voice is back soon, mine came back but I was croaky for a bit and the cough took a while to go

donotmissyourchancetoblow · 08/03/2026 20:28

I had similar at the end of January but just a hoarse/croaky voice for 2 days, that ended up in a sinus infection and I just finished the antibiotics on 20/02. It’s like whatever it was hasn’t shifted and now it’s back with vengeance! It’s actually sore to force myself to talk and I’m wiped out.
im terrible when I’m unwell and usually just soldier on but I’ve done nothing today except drink hot drinks and watch tv!
