Use kefir within 2 days?!

I purchased a 1kg bottle today as I want to improve my gut health. I was surprised it says use within 2 days? Unless the whole household is drinking it, how can you get through it in 2 days?? That’ll be an expensive habit I won’t be able to get in to.

I use Kefir for up to a week but as it is a live product it did taste a little more sour at the end.

i can’t see how being MORE live can be a problem and we were fine.

If you are new to it you may want to take it slow. Live cultures are great but can cause some explosive effects of you're not used to it! Maybe it can be frozen? Worth checking if it can be.

I never finish mine in 2 days, more like 4, same with my live sauerkraut, I haven’t even bothered to look at the storage instructions, I just chuck it when it starts to smell a bit funky 😁

I use small pots of kefir that last me three days. No problem at all as long as within the use-by date, and even then it wouldn't bother me to use it if not actually mouldy.🙂

I enjoy the Bio&Me kefir biome yoghurt and have never had any explosions (should I feel cheated?!).

If keep cold in the fridge kefir has a reasonably long Use By date. Is it qualified by 2 days once opened?

dizzydizzydizzy · 28/02/2026 18:16

I buy the Biotiful 1 litre bottles. It takes me several days, 4 or 5 I think, to get to the end of the bottle. As far as I can tell, they taste exactly the same after 4 or 5 days as they do on day 1.

Buy kefir yoghurt instead. The Collective is my favourite, lovely and thick. I use it for weeks. Wouldn't occur to me to not use it until it grows mould!

I also use it to make my overnight pats breakfast every evening and leave it in my bag overnight and don't refrigerate. I don't like cold yoghurt but also I think it gives the cultures time to multiply!

Yes, the use by date is 20th march, but says once opened it’s 2 days. Ok, I’ll just carry on and see how I go 🤣

That's just the manufacturers covering their arses. I make my own kefir so it's open from the day I start making it. It lasts ages. As long as it is white it is right. When I used to buy kefir yogurt I would eat out of date stuff. Check this out.
