suffocating in a car seat

Hello ladies! REALLY need help from someone who might have had the same problem or from anyone who might have a good explanation. i have 3 month old daughter. until thursday last week had no problems. wilst going on a short trip in a car, she was crying (nothing out of the ordinary) as i parked and took her out of the car (she was still in her car seat) she momentarily stopped crying and then suddenly went bright red with very wide openned eyes, stretched lips and as if someone is strangling her (or squeezing her very hard) and looked as if unable to breathe out. I thought my heart was going to jump out! I took her out of the car seat, she stopped doing that in about 5-10 seconds. then had heavy breathing for about a minute or two. after that everything was normal again. same thing repeated two more times in the following two days - both in the car seat. once she was happy and was no where near crying then suddenly went unable to breathe again. one of the case was in the car, two out. two cases - she just eaten. one - after 30 minutes. besides, in between these incidents we had normal trips in the car - with no problems. apart from that the child is her usual self. HELP! i am house bound, absolutely terrified of going anywhere!

Yikes - what car seat do you have? Is it the mamas and papas SIP one, because that's what we have and I find it very upright and read research about upright ones sort of choking babies.

Maybe also try a neck sleeve type thing, might help keep the head more upright rather than flop and sort of choke her.

I'd take her to the doctors to be checked over in case anything is wrong. Must have been awful.

It doesn't sound like she's suffocating. Is she otherwise a healthy baby? I don't want to scare you but in a baby who already has problems I would suggest that you go to your doctor about these. My younger sister used to do something very similar when we changed her nappy as a baby and they eventually progressed into seizures. I'm sure this will not be the case with your baby but if you have any concerns please go to your doctor.

Yep the baby is otherwise healthy. It is just so odd. Seeing the doctors tonight. Thanks for the answers

My DD used to have similar episodes as a baby, turned out that it was silent reflux causing hers. The reflux was coming up, temporary blocking her airway, causing these episodes and then she would be absolutely fine moments later. Maybe the position your DD is in the car seat may be aggravating reflux for her??, maybe something for the doctor to check??
