I tried them for a week and had to return them. DH gets on well with his but he has a desk job. I’m a teacher and need to look up and down and around at the little people all the time. The varifocals sent me dizzy. I now have reading glasses and distance though I don’t really need the distance ones often.

I've had varifocals for years and was warned they might make me dizzy but actually had no symptoms at all. It means I can drive, talk to people and read without the constant swapping. There's no way I'd go back to having 2 pairs of glasses.

Dan757 · 15/02/2026 23:25

Was they standard lens?

They were at the time although I've opted for ultralight lenses since then because I now wear rimless glasses.

Vision Express were good though, they give you a period to try them out and if not for you they will switch to single vision at no extra cost- in fact a refund as they’re cheaper.

I got my first pair of varifocals about 5 years ago, standard lens. I wore them straight out of the optician's and had no problems at all - no dizziness etc. For my next pair I tried the more expensive lenses and tbh didn't notice any difference. Varifocals are brilliant for me.

Did you not find it weird not being able to move your head normally? I don’t like being restricted to which part of the lens I could look through to get clear vision.

@landlordhell you soon get used to the different levels, the only thing l had to take extra care with at the start was moving my head to check traffic when crossing a road as that caused me to feel a bit dizzy, (very strong prescription though) .

I’ve got varifocals this time and have really taken to them. Was told by the optician it’s hit and miss whether they work for you or not. Which is not great when they are so expensive

That’s why Vision Express was good- I don’t work for them! I took mine back after 2 weeks and they swapped them.

MoiraPlunkett · 17/02/2026 07:58

I took to mine straight away - initially was aware of blurry bits at the periphery but soon didn't even notice that.

If they don't seem right, you need to go back and have them adjusted. I had that with my second pair but the optician was able to resolve it.

badgersbadgerseverywhere · 17/02/2026 08:15

I took to mine straight away and had no blurring in the periphery. I went for the medium range priced lenses (Specsavers) which cost I think £230. They offer a 90 day money back guarantee if you don’t get on with them.

Since then I have tried varifocal contact lenses. Now those would really blow your mind! No blurring or remembering to move your head not your eyes at all! Shame they’re too expensive for me to wear every day. But I am getting some for special days and weekends.

@landlordhellooh that’s good to know! Thanks
