Wrist sprain getting worse?

I injured my wrist on Monday (so seven days ago ), it was a harsh impact.
initially my left wrist hurt and had a bruise. The following day my right wrist started hurting, though no visible bruising. I’ve had it in a wrist support which is helping, but it’s getting worse. It hurts if I move it or put pressure on it, but it’s not especially painful if it’s still, just a bit uncomfortable.
is that usual with a sprain?

It may well be broken 🙁 Did you see a doctor about it at the time or have it x rayed? Wrist breaks are notorious for being undiagnosed as there are so many little bones in the wrist joint and it can be hard to see the fracture line.

if you haven’t seen anyone and as the pain is getting worse, not better, I’d be off to A&E or minor injuries for a x ray.

Thanks @PsychoSyd
I can move all my fingers, I have driven (though this does make it worse)
no I didn’t see anyone, a nurse (I work in a hospital) cast a quick eye over the left one and said it was just bruised, but the right one wasn’t hurting at that point

Don’t know if I should see a nurse? Or go to the walk in clinic?

You need it x.rayed 🤷‍♀️ have you got a minor injuries unit near you? If not you need to go to a&e.

I sprained mine hoiking a heavy rucksack onto my shoulder of all things. Still hurt a week later and got worse when I'd forget and do something which exasperated it like push myself up on the arms of an office chair. Sprains can take ages to heal.

But if you fell on it it makes sense to get an xray.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 15/02/2026 20:55

@Girliefriendlikespuppies yes I can go to minor injuries tomorrow

@Blarn ues it was a heavy impact. Hoping it’s just a sprain but I’m flying overseas on Friday so maybe should check?

I’m going to go to walk in today - feel a bit daft though, I can carry a cup of tea (with some discomfort) so surely it can’t be broken?

You need an X-ray so don’t feel silly (I’m a nurse.)

You may have a small fracture.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 16/02/2026 08:29

@Girliefriendlikespuppies okay , thank you, that’s helpful
even though I can carry a cup?

I hope you’ve gone to the walk in. It may be a small fracture, but even if it’s just a sprain a decent wrist support will help. I fell recently and have a small fracture in my tibia. Having a proper knee support from the hospital really makes a difference in comfort.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 16/02/2026 09:41

Thanks @NerdyBird
im going at lunchtime today
will take supplies- maybe a sleeping bag? And a small tv?

Yes! Although you probably shouldn’t be putting any additional pressure through the wrist anyway.

How did you get on at minor injuries?

I broke my ankle recently and still managed to hobble about on it. Was convinced it was just sprained until I saw the x-ray.

Hope you got on ok today.

Thank you all, tendonitis, no fracture, just need to rest it! Phew
