Any ideas? Mouth and tongue pain

I’ve had a swollen sore tongue for 6 weeks now, lips are constantly extremely dry. The tip of my tongue feels burnt .
(started after nasty winter cold cough but that may be coincidence)

I was prescribed an anti fungal suspension by Gp 10 days ago (she looked and said it “might” be thrush) , took it for the 7 days , 4 times a day, holding in mouth as advised. If anything my mouth and tongue are even worse.

called surgery today, 3 weeks wait till appointment.

it hurts to talk, food tastes crap , tongue tip burns , lips are sore and cracking.

Never happened before, I’m 62, waiting on seeing hrt clinic as now fed up with other menopausal symptoms. I did read up on burning tongue syndrome they said it could be associated with menopause

anyone had something like this? Could it still be thrush as Gp assumed in prescribing anti fungal? How does one even get thrush in mouth as adult if not sexually active ?

should I be callingcsurgery tomorrow and pushing for more urgent appointment ?

Low vit b12

Book an appointment with a dentist (if you can) who will know more about mouth conditions

Look up burning mouth syndrome. This stuff is very good alpha lipoic acid. But do continue to monitor with the gp

I take multi vit - it says that is included …wouldn’t that be enough?

I think that’d be a lot longer than 3 weeks 😳, I’m nhs (yes really, like gold dust but travel an hour back to my old dentist)
I got cut down to 1 appointment per 12 mouths as my teeth and gums were in his view just fine and others needed appointment more. So, they’re bombed and I’d be waiting a long time …but I agree they’d maybe better…I’m suspecting though GO better to take swabs and bloods if necessary that’s why I thought go first

thanks

Could you stretch to a private dentist appointment as a one off? I'd want it checked asap by a mouth expert to rule out anything sinister.

Ok, good point, I’ll call my bupa tomorrow to see if option…I can’t afford it as now retired..my old company pays BUPA for me!

Just need to figure out how to take decent pictures then 🤣🤣!

Second this advice. Better safe than sorry

I had persistent tongue pain -not as severe as yours- but enough to be problematic , discovered I was anaemic, after having to ask for bloods to be done twice - super strong iron tablets for 1month now and it seems to have cleared up. It’s one of the more obscure symptoms of anaemia, but it is one nonetheless- the prescribed iron was about 200% stronger than my off the shelf one (I was taking multivitamin plus extra iron)

Have a look at something called lichen planus - it’s an autoimmune condition, sounds like what you describe. Mine was confirmed with a biopsy. I find toothpaste with SLS in trigger it badly. Try switching to SLS free toothpaste. Ask your GP to refer you to ENT specialist.
