Hi, I noticed this small patch in my hair line back in November and I kind of forgot about it until I noticed it again today. Does this look like alopecia? I’m very scar

Is this alopecia ?

I should premise this by saying I’m not a doctor and it’s hard to tell from the photo. It looks a very small patch - totally unnoticeable to anyone else - and as though it could just be thinner hair there? If you noticed it in November and it hasn’t spread, is it possible that it might be a patch where you’ve had a scar without realising and so hair doesn’t grow? It’s encouraging that it hasnt spread since November. If you think it might be alopecia, I would suggest you go to the gp and / or to a clinic specialising in alopecia. My daughter had a small patch of alopecia this time last year and we took her to the gp and then to a dermatologist specialising in scalp / hair. The dermatologist gave her some steroid liquid to put on the patch. We also used red light on it daily. It’s filled in now and - fingers crossed - no other patches. I was also very worried, but actually even though for her it was alopecia it didn’t spread and it grew back. From the picture, it looks like you’ve otherwise got lots of lovely hair so try not to worry too much, but if you’re concerned go to the doctor.

@pineapplesunshinethank you so much for the reply. I’m glad to hear your daughters patch has grown back. Was her patch bigger than the one I have ? I will definitely go to the gp and have it checked out. I’m such a worrier and always presume the worst case scenario

Hi, yes, her patch was larger - and in the middle of her head just behind her hair line. It was much more noticeable and it got bigger / spread over a few weeks - which is why I thought it sounded encouraging that yours hasnt grown - or is still very small - since November. I was very worried for my daughter, but it has fully grown back now (still shorter than the rest of her very long hair obviously, as it’s younger / newer) and a year on no other patches. Do try not to worry, but if it’s on your mind see the gp. A decent gp should be able to tell if it looks like alopecia- our gp suggested that straight away and the dermatologist confirmed it. In contrast, Ive found my hair getting sparser around the temple as Ive got older - hormonal, I think - and also used the red light and it has sorted that out too.
