Cantaloupe, cantaloupe! Will you eat the bad mango? - 10 / 10 thread

For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

oh no FMF!
this is plain bullying, surely? how ds reacts is irrelevant - he's being picked on and bullied

it is bullying, isn't it. I am just at a loss as to why all of a sudden, all the boys have taken agasint him so badly.
4 of the children involved have been to play, and he has been to their parties and he considered them friends. The child who put sand in, is a funny one, with a problematic home-life, we have known him since playschool and they have a sort of love/hate relationship. Him on his own we can handle, but not the whole class!

fullmoonfiend · 19/06/2008 18:04

eek at veg show! I have nothing anywhere near maturity, just baby leaves.

TooTicky · 19/06/2008 18:12

Oh no Fmf, that is rotten
But tell me about pea shoots....

I went foraging in the garden earlier. I pulled a carrot, the thickest we had but still pretty small, to find it only went about an inch before splitting into two dinky bits.
Picked 6 or 7 pea pods to use as mange tout.
I am HUNGRY dammit, why didn't I start everything off earlier?
Our lettuce is good but only because we bought plants when seeds failed.

Can you eat broad bean pods if they are v. young?

Also, is it possible to make a crumble topping without margarine or oil? I considered breadcrumbs and sugar, and oats?

Guadalupe · 19/06/2008 18:15

It wouldn't crumble though would it, Toot? When I don't rub the fat in properly, it leaves powdery bits that float about and that's annoying.

Why are you hungry? Can you not whip up some of your raisin thingummies?

Guadalupe · 19/06/2008 18:16

FMV - that is horrible, I would be insisting of speking to somebody about it. If the teacher cannot then the head.

TooTicky · 19/06/2008 18:17

Not much food in. Am having to be "creative".
I have 3 stalks of rhubarb - because one was broken and it seemed silly not to pick the other two of similar size.

fullmoonfiend · 19/06/2008 18:18

you just snip off the first 2-5 inches off the pea plant - but I have grown a row just for this purpose as they will not flower as I keep snipping the tops off IYSWIM. Very tender and yummy.

think you will have to be patient for the broad beans... though I did esat a couple of broad bean shoots too, they tasted, well, beany!

TooTicky · 19/06/2008 18:19

Sorry, am being crap whingey moany person. I think I need sleep.

fullmoonfiend · 19/06/2008 18:19

I will have to go to teacher first, I am a governor, and I know how much resentment it causes if parents go straight to the top.

TooTicky · 19/06/2008 18:20

I might try that Fmf

fullmoonfiend · 19/06/2008 18:20

I wish I didn't have dh and kids to cater for, I could live so helthily and cheaply by myself....

Guadalupe · 19/06/2008 18:21

there's nothing moany about saying you have no food. Is there really nothing, Toot, are you actually hungry and there's no food? That is shit.

That's enough to make anyone grumpy.

TooTicky · 19/06/2008 18:21

What about tomorrow? Can teacher not see you tomorrow? Can't head cover class at start/end of day to free up teacher?

Guadalupe · 19/06/2008 18:22

really, FMV? I have done that a couple of times

fullmoonfiend · 19/06/2008 18:24

erm, well you're supposed to give the teachers a chance to sort things first (and then go for the big guns )
tis considered bad form, apparently to sidestep teachers. But that's just in our scholl

fullmoonfiend · 19/06/2008 18:25

no teacher can't see me tomorrow. Unless of course, ds loses it and punches someone, in which case, I imagine she'll find a window in her schedule...

TooTicky · 19/06/2008 18:25

Well, there is food. There are lentils that I would eat but nobody else would
Ditto chick peas
I have three (!) boxes of carob flour
We're low on staples like oil/marge/flour/oats/soya milk/cereal, chocolate

It's just annoying.
Laughable really.
Because dp's mum has sent a cheque for £4000 to spend on a car which must be from a Reputable Dealer, newer than what we have, and not red
And we send back the change.
If only we could get something decent privately and spend the rest on essentials....
still, the bank is temporarily in credit for the first time in ages

TooTicky · 19/06/2008 18:27

Yes but teachers should be available to sort problems

fullmoonfiend · 19/06/2008 18:28

TooT that's terrible!
I empathise, we have 2 eggs and 8 slices of bread and the kids are demanding pudding and I have nowt, as I need the bread for brekkie and packed lunches. We have run out of fruit! (except pineapple which they won't eat.

Guadalupe · 19/06/2008 18:39

could you make yourself a nice lentil soup? Very comforting.

Fmv - you should say, please fit me in somewhere, either before school, at lunchtime, or would you mind if I chatted to someone else about it as I'd like to discuss it before the weekend. It's not good enough is it?

Guadalupe · 19/06/2008 18:40

mine love pipnapple

what are you all having for dinner then, Toot?

Guadalupe · 19/06/2008 18:41

I like inventing new fruits
