Virus, Cold, Cough etc 4 weeks…

Hi.

Has anyone else had cold / flu symptoms for nearly 5 weeks?! It started with a sore throat, then ear ache (antibiotics didn’t help) then sinuses blocked, then a cough, then a gunky and swollen eye, then sore throat again, then I lost my voice for 4 days. Voice is slowly coming back but still sore throat!!!

My daughter started nursing 2 months ago, she’s constantly picking bugs up, I’m 5 weeks pregnant, the gp’s all said it sounds viral, I don’t feel ill or have a temperature.

Any ideas?! I’m trying not to panic that it’s something bad xx

I’ve had those symptoms since before Christmas, it’s viral. Just starting to feel a little better this week. A few of my family members have been the same.

Thank you @CheshireCat1 for responding. Did the symptoms alternate for you?

It sounds like Covid to me as I had similar symptoms. Lasted for several weeks. It was like I was getting better then I'd be flat out again tired, sinuses, cough, fever was very mild or reg temp. Just get a lot of rest and stay hydrated. If you feel worse see doctor again.

I have had this 'bug' since boxing day and still not rid - started with bad cough and runny nose, coughing has subsided but is still there a bit, I'm still very snotty and just have no energy. I felt so unwell and exhausted in the 4th week of symptoms that I went to the GP. She gave me a course of antibiotics and that had an immediate effect in restoring some of my energy but I'm still not better. And one of my main unusual symptoms has been really loud snoring which DH hates so I've been in the spare bed for 4 weeks and counting. I would really like to be shot of it!

Yeah it’s going around I think. I’m on about week 4, everyone else on the house has had it and a few people ar work. It’s horrible. Doctor just says loads up on the vitamins.

Sympathies to all. I am on 4th week of this virus and wondering if there's any point going back to gps with it. I saw a nurse last week who didn't give me any antibiotics. The sinus pain is awful and most nights I can't sleep for coughing. The lethargy and aching don't help matters. Just feel like I am dragging myself through each day at the moment.

Yes, sore throat, ongoing cough then okay for a couple of days, then ear infection leading to hear loss and tinnitus. Then coughing and vomiting and also soft tissue infection on my neck. Have had for lots of antibiotics and at last I’m feeling a little more like my normal self. It really got me down at times.

I did a couple of COVID tests but they were negative. I think it’s just a combination of different viruses that keep hitting us because we’re run down from the others.

Really appreciate everyone’s responses and wow seems something is for sure going round and who knew you could get stuff back to back!

My throat today is agony…. Sort of wish it was just an antibiotic fix but guess it’s not.

good luck everyone!!

Could be? IME, and info from different doctors, the tests are notorious for false negative results due to needing to be done within a certain window, needing enough of the virus material and the changing nature of the virus. Whatever you have, just take care. 🩷.

I’ve had a cold for about a week now with a painful swollen neck gland the last couple of days (weird as don’t usually get that - body must be fighting hard). I had a cold in December too which was less grim but I feel there are a lot of horrible viruses around at the moment. My friend had flu over Xmas then a horrible cough/cold a couple of weeks ago.

I hadn’t had a virus for a year prior to that (caught this one off DH though). I am wondering if it’s COVID - I’ve had it 3 x all with different symptoms (once flu-like, once a streaming cold, once a high temp and feeling rotten). As no-one tests now we just don’t know! Last time for me was 18 months ago so I’m due a bout!

BookwormBeryl · 01/02/2026 10:19

For what its worth, could it be winter hayfever, which has not been nipped in the bud (sorry for the pun) and has spread to other areas, eg throats and ears, making them sore? I get this every year in December - apparently due to tree pollen, although I havent read anything vaguely scientific pointing to this. There do seem to be quite a few buds on small trees and shrubs round about. Wasnt too bad over Christmas luckily but worsened in January. I would literally sneeze 8 to 10 times every 10 minutes, had a terrible itchy nose, all resulting in a lot of horrible nose blowing (details spared) and sore throat, plus achy limbs. GP prescribed a nasal spray and anti histamine - the first pretty good but the second causing drowsiness which I hate since I feel I am not in control. It has now got better to the point where the sneezing has almost stopped, so I am going to give up the antihistamines and just take the spray for say another week.
I am a pensioner so no great shakes, I can just crawl into bed if needs be, but if you are young its not funny - life has to go on with work, kids etc. You really do have my sympathies. Call your GP and ask if it might be hayfever and if they think so, can they prescribe a non-drowsy medicine? Maybe?

itsgettingweird · 01/02/2026 10:21

My da had it before xmas and could t get rid of the sinus or cough.

went to pharmacy first and was given a steroid nasal spray.

clear within 5 days.

I came here to start a thread asking the same question. I'm on week 4/5 now I can't remember which. I started with a cough that lasted a good two weeks. I had a day or two where I was cough free then it started again but this time with a raging sore throat. Then I became congested and still am I'm snotty and feel so tired of it now. I did have a GP prescribe antibiotics for the cough as they said a chest infection but I knew it wasn't a chest infection. Just an annoying cough that wouldn't go.
