First of all you will get random glucose ; then if neccessary a fasting glucose - no breakfast then blood test.

If suggest diabetes you will be given further information. Some diabetes is managed with diet only - generally eating sensibly taking mainly slow-release carbohydrates and avoiding high-sugar content foods. High soluble fibre; plenty of fruits and vegetebles. Additional advice will be to have cholesterol checked; stop smoking etc. Good foot care and regular eye checks.

Some diabetes requires medications - not always insulin injections. very commonly tablets.

Don't panic until proper testing is done.

Lots of support groups and info around.

madcol · 13/06/2008 22:06

P.s. your blood sugars don't look like diabetes to me. Sorry didn't read the first line of your post.

babyjjbaby · 13/06/2008 22:06

thanks i had the fasting one today didn't eat anything from half 5 last night till 9 am this mornign no sqaush and it was still a bit high

OP posts:
madcol · 13/06/2008 22:10

The random blood sugar isn't high enough for diagnosis of diabetes and the fasting one is borderline.
Are you overweight? Do you have any family history of diabetes?

How old are you - if you don't mind me asking?

Why did you have the tests done in the first instance?

babyjjbaby · 13/06/2008 22:13

yeh i am over weight i am 17 i had the test done as i am always tired very thirsty weeing alot losing weight when not trying blurred vision sumtimes

Your symptoms are very suggestive of diabetes but so far your blood sugars are not very worrying. Your GP may do a blood test called a HBA1c which will be more helpful.

If you do have diabetes losing weight will help control it. Not easy I know but at least something you can do . Regular exercise also helps in its own right.

Good luck at the doctors. Please don't assume the worst.

If you are under 40 then its Type 1 Diabetes, although this would normally come on at a very young age. This one usually requires Insulin,as you have normally stopped producing any.

Type 2 comes on about the age of 40 or older, this is the type that doesnt always require Insulin, as you normally produce some Insulin naturally. But usually unless its vey "mild",which they say is a fallacy,it will need controlling by medication.

However, that said, you can reduce the "problem" or hold the condition off,by maintaining a "healthy diet" and controlling your Carbohydrate intake. You must have Carbohydrates, but we all tend to consume too many, overloading our bodies, causing this and weight gain.

babyjjbaby · 13/06/2008 22:21

thanks the woman in chemist said that was a bit high is it not

macdol - why do you say that her bg results don't suggest diabetes? They do to me. In a non-diabetic a fasting result should be around 5, not 7.4.

bramblebooks · 13/06/2008 22:27

Unfortunately type 2 is being found in more and more children due to childhood obesity. My child has type 1. I had gestational diabetes.

Good luck at the doctors. If it is diabetes then you will deal with it and once the initial shock has worn off you will manage it well. My son still eats everything he did and does everything he did before he was diagnosed. But he does it all so much better because he is now well as he has the (mainly!) correct insulin dose.

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/06/2008 22:27

Are you pregnant at the moment babyjjbaby?

madcol · 13/06/2008 22:29

The fasting should be < 7 and yes ideally would be lower but may actually be impaired glucose tolerance rather than full-blown diabetes. At that level I would go for repeat testing or a formal glucose tolerance test personally.

babyjjbaby · 13/06/2008 22:30

no not pregnant bramble books doe she find it easier now it is being treated as i get so tired at the monet been to bed twice today for bout hour each time

Ah.... I see you are 17 yrs old,so its likely they may have caught you in the early stages, although they say that sometimes people have Diabetes for 5 years prior to diagnosis.
This is usually Type 2 though as that is uaually more gradual, but you may have noticed symptoms for a while, and not realised their significance.

I would agree with madcol, try to lose weight,if you can,as this will help you "control" this.
Reduce the amount of Bread,Potatoe,Rice or Pasta that you eat, even if its by 1 Tablespoon.

Try to exercise more, even if its just a walk round the block each evening, try to walk fast enough to make you out of breath, this alone will help reduce your weight, and exercise can lower your blood sugar.

Dont worry too much about this,as gradually if you are Diabetic, you will come to understand the information you are given about it,and make changes in your lifestyle which will help you control this condition,so that you live your life normally, and without too many restrictions.

lulurose · 13/06/2008 22:33

You need to test 2 hours after eating to determine whether bg is unusually high. The symptoms you describe are similar to those my DD2 had prior to being diagnosed with Type One Diabetes. All Type Ones have to use insulin to control the disease, through injections or pump therapy.

I hope it isn't Type One, if its Type Two (unusual I think, in someone your age) then it can possibly be managed by making some lifestyle changes and/or tablets.

babyjjbaby · 13/06/2008 22:33

what sort of changes will i have to make can u go blind from it or die

OP posts:
hoxtonchick · 13/06/2008 22:37

i have had type 2 since i was 19, so it's certainly not impossible. 7.4 is too high for a fasting blood sugar, i do think you need to go & see your gp. untreated diabetes can cause some nasty complications, but following a sensible diet & taking the right medication reduces the risk of these. and you are monitored pretty closely. please go to your gp .

lulurose · 13/06/2008 22:37

Wait until you have a diagnosis before worrying too much about complications. People with Type One have better insulins and better care than ever before and so complications are likely to be less likely in this geeneration. Take one day at a time, if it is Diabetes there will be tonnes of information to absorb.

babyjjbaby · 13/06/2008 22:40

which is worse type 1 or type 2

OP posts:
hoxtonchick · 13/06/2008 22:43

type 1 is more acute & definitely needs insulin, ie injections. type 2 will initially be managed with diet/exercise/tablets but may need insulin the future.

lulurose · 13/06/2008 22:43

I'm not an expert, I only have experience of caring for my little girl (2) with Type One. Its hard for her because she can't tell me how she feels yet, she gets fed up with all the finger pricks and set changes (she has an insulin pump)

Please go back and see your GP, you haven't really said what happens next.

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/06/2008 22:44

Type 1 regarded as worst, but as others say, treatment has come a long way in recent years, so you shouldn't panic whichever type you may turn out to have.

madcol · 13/06/2008 22:45

They are different with different causes and different complications and treatments.

To clarify the diagnosis of diabetes:

2 FASTING blood sugars greater than 7. Or random or provoked glucose of greater than 11.1.

Impaired glucose tolerance describes the situation when you aren't quite diabetic but you don't process sugar in the normal way. Weight loss and exercise with good diet can prevent diabetes. Blood sugars between 6.1 -7.0 when fasting. 7.4 is not normal but as a single fasting reading may or may not be true full-blown diabetes.

babyjjbaby · 13/06/2008 22:47

ok i have always been petrified of going blind anyhow so that is my main worry i'll have to make a apointment how long does it useally take to find out if u have got it ma siad u have to wait and then go to hospital for tests is that right or do u have the doctors do it all sorry for??? but need to know
