babyjj,

I think the best thing to do is get yourself to the doctors so you can find out one way or the other. As someone said further up it could be reduced glucose tolerance, in which case you will need some advice on making lifestyle/diet changes. Or it could be T1/T2 diabetes, in which case you will need training and advice about the relationship between food, exercise and insulin. You might need some other blood tests e.g. thyroid function, coeliac disease.

There is a poster on here whose son was diagnosed with diabetes in his late teens last year who might know more about how many appointments you will need. Have a look through the old threads. My DS was 5 years old, seriously ill and spent the best part of a week in hospital when he was finally diagnosed. He now sees the consultant every 3 months, but we can go more often if we need to.

Hi,

I have type 1. It sounds like IF you have diabetes, it's type 2. Alot of type 2 can be "controlled" through diet and exercise. When I was first dxed (when I was 18), the dr told me a "diabetic" diet (if such a thing exists!)is just what any healthy normal person should eat. I don't deprive myself, believe you me.

It should not take 3 - 7 days to get your bloods back. To test a blood glucose level is a simple finger prink test, and most meters these days do it in about 5 seconds!

Good luck, as others have said it really is not a death sentence....

TigerFeet · 16/06/2008 13:19

There's no point going through the what ifs until you know for sure either way - if you do get a positive dx then the diabetes care team will go through with you how to calculate your food intake vs medication - it varies greatly and depends on the degree of your diabetes. Some people need more insulin than others depending on how much their body is still making - some people stop production completely and others have low levels of their own insulin still.

If it's any consolation, my dh is 40 and has been diabetic (type 1) for 30 years. He has no complications other than if he gets a cut or bruise it can take a lot longer than usual to heal. Nothing wrong with his eyesight or his circulation. It is possible to be diabetic and still be healthy.

thanks it's reasurring to know that gonna go to hospital in the mornig for fasting blood test cos gp said they can't diagnose it through the meters

Hi there,

Hope I can offer some reasurrance as there seems to be a lot of conflicting info on this thread! I'm diabetic (type 1) and also a practice nurse so am involved with diagnosing diabetes (usually type 2!)

The blood test is far more accurate than a finger prick test which is why it's needed for a firm diagnosis. The fasting blood test can also give an "at risk of diabetes" result as well - somewhere in between normal and diabetic iyswim.

Therefore don't panic too much about tomorrow and the result as there may be more tests involved before you get a final diagnosis.

Hope your ok

babyjjbaby · 16/06/2008 13:48

oh ok thanks i wished i could just get it over and done with and find out lol

Hi canofworms,

That's worth knowing. Nearly all the people I know with diabetes had very high BGs on diagnosis/were in full blown DKA, so there was no doubt about it, although one or two (who were siblings of children with diabetes with very alert parents who knew what to look out for) had only slightly elevated BGs becuase they were still in honeymoon and producing a little bit of insulin overnight. Can you say more about how the test works?

canofworms · 18/06/2008 23:23

Tang - sorry about not getting back to you before (just noticed your post).

In type 2 diabetes there is a gradual rise in the blood sugar unlike type 1 when onset is pretty quick and you get the high bg's and dka that you mention.

So a fasting blood test will show what level the body is regulating the blood sugar level at and if it is high then you can diagnose diabetes.

If it is only slightly raised then you need to go on to do a glucose tolerance test to diagnose diabetes.

However, there are levels in-between ie raised fasting glucose but normal glucose tolerance and even impaired glucose tolerance where the levels are raised but not by enough to diagnose diabetes. So these groups need to be screened annually for diabetes and given dietary advice etc to hopefully prevent/delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

I'm sure this seems confusing but it depends on the individuals results as to what is done next iyswim.

OP - hope the blood test went ok

tangarine · 19/06/2008 12:16

Thanks canofworms! All very interesting.

My DH was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes some 6 months ago, he had blood gulcose levels of 22+ and an average of 17.

He is now on metaformin tablets 3 times a day and almost has it under control.

He uses www.diabetes.co.uk and highly recommends the forums on there.

It isn't the end of the world but does require some life style changes, I wouldn't be worrying yourself too much yet to be honest.

If you do get diagnosed you should get a lot of help and support in finding the best way to control your diabetes.

Best of luck.

thanks i'll have a look at that site
