It's all in the blood tests so results should be available next day.

By the way blindness is entirely preventaebl for people with diabetes.

Youre getting ahead of yourself. Go and get tested then research and plan.

Let's us know how it goes.

lulurose · 13/06/2008 22:52

My DDs bg was 37mmols on diagnosis, I'd taken her to A and E because she was very drowsy and was losing weight (weeing and drinking loads too).

A simple bg test should give a diagnosis straight away, they may also test for ketones in your urine or blood, if these are present it could be dangerous and insulin would be needed.

tangarine · 13/06/2008 22:52

My DS1 has had type 1 diabetes for almost 6 years. He lives as close to a normal life as possible (he's captaining the school cricket team tomorrow).

IF (and it might not be) it is early type 1 diabetes, then you may still be producing some insulin of your own, especially overnight, which could be why the fasting test was 7.4 this morning.

Please go and see your doctor asap. If it is type 1 diabetes it can come on quite slowly, but can worsen very quickly.

Please let us know how you get on.

bramblebooks · 13/06/2008 22:53

op, now he's on insulin he's got all his zing back and is even more feisty than before. It's easily said, but try not to worry too much as it is all controllable. Things like the complications you mention are things that happen way down the line if control is not good - there are amazing new treatments out there.

bramblebooks · 13/06/2008 22:54

waving to all the other mums of kids with diabetes too. xxxx

big hug to op. (((())))

Most Diabetics dont go blind these days, because they are educated more and understand more.

With Annual Eye check ups,and problems starting can be treated before they cause harm.

The main thing is to keep your sugar levels stable, and then its unlikely that any complications will occur.

The GP or Practice Nurse will arrange the blood Test,or indeed take the blood needed for the tests. If they dont take the blood at the surgery, they'll send you to the hospital. It usually takes 3-7 days days depending on how "back logged" the labs are.

Usually the surgery will have a nurse trained in Diabetes Care, and she will see you and answer all your questions, she will keep a close eye on you over the first few months, whilst you get your head around all the new info.Write down all your questions, even if they seem silly, she won't mind. Her main job is to reassure you and help you through all of this.

is it possible to have type 2 diabetes with absolutely no symptoms? My fasting blood test came back over 8 and just had another, waiting to hear on that one. Was tested as overweight by GP. I had sugar in each of my preganancies and 4 GTT came back fine (18-14 years ago) These are the only times I have been tested. Is it possible to be diabetic for 18 years and no symptoms? Can you just be a naturally sugary person??? My GP isn't taking the pregnant sugar into account at all. Just I am fat and must be diabetic

tangarine · 13/06/2008 23:23

Hi lulu

What's a nobbly bobbly?!

Jubblies are good, hardly any carb/sugar in them.

babyjjbaby · 14/06/2008 10:43

SpacePuppy · 14/06/2008 18:36

I believe sugar is just one aspect of your diet you'll have to look at, it depends on how quickly food turns into sugar in your body, ie white breads, some pastas, potatoes etc.

babyjjbaby · 14/06/2008 18:52

i wouldn't be able not to have pasta or potatoe thats what i live on lol

OP posts:
bramblebooks · 14/06/2008 19:07

babyjj, my son adores pasta and eats it a lot - we just balance it with insulin. We make sure he has a healthy diet - half a plate of 'carbs', the rest protein and vegetables/fruit.

Seriously, don't worry, it's about healthy eating, not denial.

babyjjbaby · 14/06/2008 19:08

ok thaks i wonder if u can go on slimming world with diebetes i love greeen days which is lots of pasta and potatoes and rice

OP posts:
babyjjbaby · 14/06/2008 21:47

out of intrest how do u calculate the insulin if u eat summit bad thanks

OP posts:
bramblebooks · 14/06/2008 22:27

babyj, first things first and get yerself sorted with the dr!

BUT! If you do need insulin your support team will work with you to calculate the doses that you need xx It can be done!

babyjjbaby · 14/06/2008 22:32

yep just wondered can't go to drs for couple of weeks as i am not there

OP posts:
tangarine · 15/06/2008 09:22

If you are worried you should see a doctor asap, even if it's to find out you are fine. I don't wnat to frighten you, but as I said the other night, my ds showed signs of diabetes for a few weeks although we didn't realise it at the time, but went downhill very quickly and almost died. If you need insulin (and until you see a doctor we won't know if you do), the sooner you get on it the better. If you are away from home can you register as a temporary patient?

babyjjbaby · 15/06/2008 09:26

well i could just go bact to gloucester i spose is the first few weeks if i am diagnosed meen that there is alot of doctors appointments
