Blood Transfusion

I went to GP as past few months I've been having breathlessness and palpitations when exercising. I went for blood test on Saturday at 2pm then 4 hours later I get a phonecall from 111 to say doctor needs to talk to you. So when doctor rang they said go up to a and e immediately don't drive if you don't drive we will send an ambulance. I got there and they said I need a blood transfusion as my haemoglobin was 41 I didn't want transfusion as I'm very health conscious and worried about the infected blood scandal. So in the end I agreed and said OK and have had to have 4 units and an iron infusion. Now they want to know what caused the bleeding but I tried explaining that all my mothers side of family have iron deficientcy anaemia mum, grandmother sister, aunt and I haven't eaten red meat for many years. They asked if I eat 3 meals a day and if I live with anyone. Do they think I'm stupid? Or is this usual? Now worried I come across as some type of incapable woman! I'm a independent strong woman. They said I need a colonoscopy and a camera down but not what I want as would rather have a CT scan can i say i dont want cameras? Worried about infection as two people i know their relatives had sepsis after colonoscopy and gastropsy then had to have antibiotics and they got kidney failure and died. I have low white blood cells too leukopenia and netrophilna. So been put in side room to stop me getting infection. Bottom line is do they think I'm daft and need a hand hold as DH is now my ex and no kids only 2 step kids and nurse said have they started chemotherapy? wtf? What a crap weekend.

How are you doing op? I hope that you have seen your team today, that they know what’s causing the issue, and that it’s something easily fixed.

What did the haematologist say, you've been through it and are having lots of scans. Have they got any idea yet what's caused your blood results.

Hi Op, I’m sorry you are going through this.

I had exactly the same scenario with same numbers and was also treated as an emergency.
The levels are very dangerous.

My cause was unbelievably heavy periods, they will need to find yours, that’s what the questions are about.

Thanks for your support. I have had all the tests and it's down to extremely heavy periods - I've always had heavy periods and been to GP many times only to be told they are normal for you. I also have a bleeding disorder that cause blood not to clot. I need to have hysterectomy as flooding is so bad have to wear double sanitary wear and change every 30mins. Awful!! Even heavier now and peri is making it worse!

It is down to heavy periods and a bleeding / non clotting disorder. Having hysterectomy soon.

Haematology said i have a blood disorder need to be referred to another hospital and the bleeding is from insanely heavy peri periods. Horribly scary flooding every time i stand. Under gynae and hopefully a hysterectomy private funding as so scared of being anaemic again

A couple of months ago I was hospitalised after vomiting blood. After vomiting I felt fine and told anyone who would listen.

After my adult child told me they were taking me to A&E because they'd been advised (by 111)an ambulance would take too lon I went.
But it might mean an operation
Within 30 minutes I was in the resuscitation unit. My blood pressure was low, my temperature was low both were dropping, and my heart rate was tachycardic.

I still felt fine,I was still saying I was ok.

I was told I had an internal bleed, they would put a camera down to see were it was from and go from there but they may have to operate and , had I thoughts on "do not resuscitate?" (I've had cancer three times, so I guess they were thinking that cancer was here again)

that's when I started taking the situation seriously.

Had the camera thing. Turns out I had a gastric ulcer that was bleeding, fixed during the camera procedure.

Before I vomited blood, I had absolutely no symptoms. No tummy issues at all.

Like you, I thought family and medics were making a fuss. I was wrong.

So might you be.

I'm glad you're okay now.
I've been to gynaecology so far and its been identified I have menorrhagia caused by a bleeding disorder and fibroids and ovarian cysts after having unbelievable heavy periods. Now on tranexamic acid. No difference so having hysterectomy
