Does this sound like a migraine?

Never had a migraine before but for the last 3 days I’ve had a headache I can’t shift, not really really painful most of the time, but just not improved by paracetamol or ibuprofen at all. I’ve been absolutely wiped out, hardly able to get out of bed to the loo, very weak, extreme hot flushes followed by chills, dizziness, nausea, and very vivid nightmares.

I presumed it was flu initially as DH has been poorly, but I’ve had no respiratory symptoms or aching muscles at all. Plus it was a million times worse when I looked at a screen, so I laid in a dark room for 3 days essentially. I tried audiobooks but they hurt my head and exhausted me too much. But I’ve woken but this morning MUCH better, still a bit more tired than usual, but suddenly much better than the last 3 days.

I didn’t think migraines would last so long though, and thought the headache would be worse?

My migraines present only on one side of my head as a throbbing unrelenting pain, they are really quite painful, they’re usually focussed in my ear, behind my eye and up my neck, I can’t get comfortable in any position, I’ll often feel sick and throw up, i often can’t sleep but am so tired, I need to be in the dark and they will often last anywhere between a few hours and a few days. After the man symptoms ease I’ll get a postdrome (like a hangover) which usually lasts 24 hours. It’s exhausting. If the pain was all over your head it’s unlikely to be a migraine. If it was one sided then it could be.

I think people experience them differently. For me they are wobbly vision intense pain usually in one temple and dizziness / nausea and vomiting but only when I move my head! On treatment (with sumatriptan) the pain goes first, usually within 20mins then nausea and dizziness goes but I’m left with a very vacant feeling for at least 24 hrs after .

Hope you feel better soon. To be honest it doesn't sound like a migraine. Mine are always on one side as a previous poster says. I feel dizzy/ have vertigo, sometimes nausea, sometimes vision problems like black spots in vision. Afterwards feel so tired. Can last for days. No chills or anything like that

CypressGrove · 22/01/2026 20:33

Migraines can definitely last for three days, but it doesn't sound like one necessarily due to the intensity of the pain and all over headache rather than one sided. I wouldn't rule out flu or more likely covid - that can often present with headache and gastro symptoms and not respiratory or aches.

Mmm thanks all. Must be a virus. It’s def not just one side of the head.

No, I don’t think so. Probably a bug.
Everyone’s symptoms are different, but mine start with a thumping headache (usually to one side of the head). I also feel like I’m going to be sick. I have a very small window of time in which to take my meds (nasal spray as I can’t keep anything down with a migraine), otherwise I am violently sick. I then have to lie down/sleep until it fades. It then takes a few days to go completely.

I’d say virus

Anewuser · 22/01/2026 20:44

I’ve only had one migraine which was in one side where I also loss vision in one eye. However, one of the times I had Covid, the symptoms were very similar to how you present, especially the vivid dreams.

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 22/01/2026 21:15

I’ve had migraines but your symptoms sound closer to the symptoms I had when I had Covid. I had horrible chills and my head hurt so much it felt like it was going pop off, I could feel so much pressure.

winterbluess · 22/01/2026 21:26

Possibly some sort of virus. I had similar last week with a bad headache I just couldn't shift no matter what I took, lasted about 4 days. Had slight nausea as well but possibly from the headache.. someone at work had similar a few weeks ago too

Cherubneddy · 24/01/2026 12:11

Thanks all. I think it’s probably covid. Day 6 and my head is still throbbing and I’m still nauseous. DH thinks I should see the dr on Monday if I’m not any better, I think it’s pointless as I’m sure it’s a virus….
