Colonoscopy prep. not working!

Rowgtfc72 · 21/01/2026 19:16

I have a colonoscopy at 9am tomorrow and had to take picolax prep at 3pm today and 3am tomorrow.
Mixed up the 150ml, chugged it down and followed with a couple of pints of clear liquid.
I've been to the loo four times, it's not water and nothing has really happened. I was expecting a poonami.
I've read the second dose works better but it's an hour travel to the hospital and I'm firstly worried not much is happening and secondly, will I be done before I leave?
My stomach is really gurgly but no cramping.
Any ideas?

Are you sure your timings are right? 3am sounds late for a 9am appt?

You still have the night to get through !

Keep up your fluids . and when you take the second dose it should kick in.
If you did your Pre-Prep food regime there hopefully shouldn't be that much to shift .

Good Luck - this is the worst bit . The actual colonoscopy is plain sailing after this .

I cannot remember what my last prep was but one was fruity like mango and the second one was like almond .

I’ve done this a few times - for me
the poonami occurs after the second dose every time!!

I agree the timings seem odd but best thing is to just follow the instructions you’ve been given.

keep calm and near to the loo - it will work after the second dose I’m sure.

I had a different prep but hardly pooed at all , if you’ve followed the diet properly there may not be much to come out .

Prep was orange flavour and not bad.
I'm going by the timings on the box which has my appointment time on it.
I did get a phonecall off the pre assessment nurse last week and she told me 5pm today at 430am tomorrow for a 9am appointment. That sounded dicey!
I'm thinking of starting it at 2am instead, gives me 6hrs then.
Colonoscopy doesn't bother me, and I'm suspected dairy and gluten intolerant so extremely used to poonamis. Pint of milk would do the job lovely but I'm not allowed milk only clear fluids.
I had my last food at 7pm yesterday and have only eaten small amounts of white bread, egg, cheese and potato since Saturday teatime.
I'm 4 pints of liquid in since 3pm, I'm usually lucky to drink an entire pint of liquid a day and have been very good to down 2ltrs a day this week.
Hoping the second dose sorts it.

Oh good luck! I also have a colonoscopy tomorrow morning. My prep is plenvu, first dose was at 6pm and second is at 9pm. First one started working within an hour (on the toilet as I type this Blush). I have read it can take hours for some folk so I’m sure the second dose will work for you. Best of luck for the morning!

Rowgtfc72 · 21/01/2026 20:03

@nonsensicalmess hope all goes well for you too.

Second dose worked very well. Good job I took it an hour earlier.
Hospital was very efficient, consultant great, didn't feel sedated and watched it all. Just a litte sore when the camera refused to turn a corner.
Had the best nights sleep ever (what is in that sedation?) Just a little sore from where the biopsies were taken but apparently all looked good.

Glad it worked for you .
The coffee/tea and biscuits are the nicest thing ever after the Starve'n'Purge .

I'm sure I had Plenvu - it was the least horrible out of all the ones I've had .
