Medical abortion positive!!

After weeks of traumatising myself reading the horror stories online I’ve now done my medical abortion today. It’s now the evening and still have slight cramping but up to now no complications.

So I went with MSI choices and went into the clinic for a scan, the nurse was lovely and she scanned me at 6 weeks and 5 days (earlier than what I thought), I waited until the weekend so I took my first tablet when I was 7 weeks on the Saturday. This tablet I just swallowed with water and it was fine, no sickness, no bleeding, no nothing felt absolutely fine and could go on with my day as normal. On Sunday at 11am I took the 4 misoprostol, these can be dissolved in your mouth or inserted vaginally. I chose to put these in my mouth between my gums and cheek and let them dissolve for 30 minutes, this was fine didn’t taste of anything, after 30 minutes I swallowed the rest with water, the taste of swallowing it was horrible but once they had gone down it was fine there was no after taste.
i led in bed watching films to stay distracted and got nothing other than slight cramping just like a period cramp, 2 1/2 hours after taking them bleeding started, nothing heavy just again like a period, when I went to the toilet that’s where there was more bleeding, lots of clots big and small was coming out, they didn’t hurt just felt like a heavy period. 3 hours after taking the 4 I took another 2 tablets the same way letting them dissolve in my gums for 30 mins. These did not make the pain worse or anything it just stayed the same. All day I’ve been on and off cramping but again nothing major, they was uncomfortable but not unbearable I would say 5/10.
Ive experienced bleeding on my pads but not a lot I’ve lost most of mine on the toilet.
ive only had 2 paracetamol at the beginning of the process and not felt as though I’ve needed any more pain relief after.

Anyone who’s thinking of going through this please don’t read the horror stories like I did because honestly I’ve been expecting the worst and really it’s not as bad as you think.

I'm in exactly the same position. First tablet had no side effects, 4 misoprostol were fine internally and started bleeding around 2 hours after inserting. Have done nothing but worry about how bad and painful it was going to be, but it's been very straightforward and luckily haven't even had a cramp. I even wondered if maybe I've had cramps in my sleep but not felt them.

Have a follow up phonecall with a nurse tomorrow so fingers crossed all has gone smoothly.

So glad you had a positive experience with it as well. Can I ask what has your bleeding been like? I seem to bleed more in the toilet than I have done on my pads, I passed a few clots yesterday and then this morning I’m still bleeding but it’s slowed down massively it’s now just like my usual period.

Pretty much the same. I'm day 5 after misoprostol and it's barely anything now

Ukmum25 · 19/01/2026 13:40

Ok that’s good to know then keep thinking it’s not worked properly because my experience has been nowhere near as bad as what I’d been reading online.

I had one and was also terrified of pain. Felt like normal period pains and then just had medium to light bleeding for about 5 days. Apparently a lot of the scare stories online are written by anti abortion groups trying to put women off from doing it

Ukmum25 · 19/01/2026 14:44

So glad you’ve said this making me feel so much better! I’ve been panicking that it hasn’t worked properly because the pain was fine and the bleeding hasn’t been bad.

I agree @Ukmum25. I know two people who have had one, and it wasn’t a difficult process, they thought.
