Low Ferritin - Dr's Request

Alfabettyjetty · 14/01/2026 17:27

I recently had some blood tests taken, and my ferritin came back at 10 hemoglobin normal. So I assume this means I have non anemic iron defficiency?

The GP has sent a request for me to go to see them, does anyone have experience of what next steps look like?

Ordinarily they will prescribe via text after a blood test if any treatment is needed so the request to see them is worrying me a little.

They will want to check the reason you are iron deficient.

Yes they can just give you iron tablets (usually you have to buy these) but that won't stop the problem coming back.

I had the bloods taken to investigate heavy bleeding during my periods, they referred me for a scan and to have these bloods taken. The scan appointment hasn't come through yet but the bloods are obviously much quicker.

Is it likely they'll want to do other tests?

I am in exactly the same situation
Had a phone appt with GP who, as PP said was looking for a reason.
I've given blood for 10 years so probably due to that

I've cancelled blood donation, got some iron tablets and will request another blood test in a few months

I feel fine in myself, hopefully my hair will improve and stop falling out!

I'm older than you tho so no periods

They will want to find the reason why so may refer you for other tests

Same here & older too so no periods. Had to stop being a blood doner years ago.
My GP wanted to see me, prescribed iron tablets but also wanted other tests to see if I was losing blood somewhere. So far I’ve had second blood tests, a FIT test & an endoscopy that found a very large hiatus hernia but no bleeding found so far. Have been sent to see two consultant gastroenterologists, & am waiting on an appointment as referred to another by the last one! Still no wiser as to the low iron & resulting anemia. Hate the iron pills.

One reason could be that you're not absorbing it, I was diagnosed with coeliac disease at 40 it's very common as you get older, could explain things with no periods.
