MRI Scan - General Anaesthetic or not?

I'm sorry to post again asking for help ,particularly after my recent absence from the boards, but I wondered if anyone had any advice. As some of you know I have a 2 yr old ds with cerebral palsy and am very used to him having to visit hospitals etc! This time the problem is with dd, aged nearly 8 ...... For the past 6 - 8 wks she has been suffering with very bad heads and exhaustion. To cut a long story short, Gp has tried migraine medication - no help - and last wk referred her to a consultant. Much to our shock the hospital rang us the next day and spent 2 days taking bloods, coordination tests etc. We have now been told that they want an MRI done 'as a matter of urgency' Apparently she will have to stay totally still for about 15 mins. They said 7 yrs and under would be definite general anaesthetic, but cos she's nearly 8 they hope she can stay awake. Anyone had any experience of this ?

Guess waht - as dd is still not terribly well, paed has decided that CT scan was NOT conclusive. Now wants an MRI scan after all, I'm gutted and now dreading the next few weeks when it's due to take place, especially as doc told dd (8) that she has to go in a 'noisy box'

sorry to hear this mabs, aren't doctors bloody tactless. Have they sorted you out a date yet or is it another waiting game? I dont think MRIs are that different from CTs apart from the claustriphobia (sp?) issue. When my dd had her CT scan she was sedated and Im sure with your dd being older they wont need to give her a GA.

breeze · 23/06/2003 21:10

Sorry to hear that mabs, will be thinking of you and your daughter. {{{{{hugs{}}}}}}}

WideWebWitch · 23/06/2003 21:13

Oh MABS I'm sorry.

lou33 · 23/06/2003 21:49

How worrying and frustrating for you Mabs, I hope you get seen very soon and can get dd on the mend, and some questions answered.

Marina · 23/06/2003 22:21

MABS, just to join the others here in wishing you luck in getting this resolved, and commiserations that it is dragging on so long. Hugs to you and your dd, the worry must be so draining.

MABS · 05/08/2003 20:52

sorry all hardly here at the mo as moving house Friday but, just an update. DD had mri scan yesterday as she was a star - she kept still and didn't even need sedation, let alone a GA. Now we just wait for results, doc said to work on the no news is good news basis!!

What a superstar of a girl you've got, MABS. I hope all will be well and you don't go too doolally waiting for the results- sounds nerve wracking in the extreme. Anyway, lots of love and well done to that brave daughter of yours. xxx

fio2 · 05/08/2003 21:09

Glad it didnt frighten her too much. I think it must be really difficult to lay that still for so long, especially when you are young. How brave, hope everything turns out okay and hope you have a smooth house move

CAM · 06/08/2003 18:25

Gosh how excellent of your daughter, Mabs. Hope the house move goes well in this heat. Wishing you the best for the results, love Cam xxxx

mieow · 06/08/2003 19:04

DD1 has got another MRI tomorrow. They want to check for water on the brain and to see if the damage seen on the last MRI is still contained, As I have said before the best we can hope for now is Cerebral Palsy, but the scan will tell us more.

fio2 · 06/08/2003 19:06

mieow hope it goes okay for your dd1 tommorow

MABS · 06/08/2003 20:34

thinking of you Mieow - good luck
