Severe back pain

Hoping for some advice although not sure what can help.

DH is in severe pain with his lower back. He hurt it a few weeks ago, it did get better but yesterday he was moving heavy boxes and it went again. It's much worse than it was before. He's currently on the floor, crying in pain, unable to move at all. He had got out of bed to use the loo and tried to come downstairs but he got as far as the hallway.

I've called our local surgery, we're waiting on a call back from a GP. Chased it up and was told by the receptionist to call an ambulance if the pain is that bad. This I did, despite knowing there was no point, and sure enough - 'call your GP'.

Tried 111 but huge queue and tbh they'll be no help either.

He's taken codeine, diazepam and had ibuprofen gel. GP prescribed diazepam yesterday but refused to prescribe anything else. The codeine is OTC with ibuprofen.

It's horrible seeing him like this and I feel utterly helpless. He literally cannot move because the pain is so bad. I guess all we can is wait for the GP to call - had a look online but only deemed an emergency if he has numbness etc.

Any advice hugely appreciated!

Alternate ice and heat while waiting for 111 to call back. If he can't move then it's an emergency.
